The Department of Anthropology at New York University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment for a Legal Anthropologist at the level of Assistant Professor. The appointment will begin July 1, 2025, subject to administrative and budgetary approval.  

We seek candidates with a PhD in Anthropology, ideally jointly holding a LLM or a J.D. at the time of appointment. As this position requires a unique specialization in anthropology and law, we are open to the range of critical work at the intersection of legal systems and diverse social norms, practices, and values. The research projects, legal interests, and intellectual trajectories of successful candidates may explore questions including but not limited to the practice of human rights; the legal construction of race and debates concerning race-based reparative and redistributive practices; migration and immigration policy; environmental justice; anthropologically informed perspectives on carcerality; legal formations of secularism and religious nationalism; the legal construction of gender, sex, and sexuality; and the study of legal institutions domestically and trans-nationally. The overall regional or geographic focus is open. 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogically inclusive excellence supporting the department’s programs. At the undergraduate level, the appointee will be expected to teach introductory and more advanced courses in an area of their expertise. At the graduate level, the appointee will teach courses and supervise students as their contribution to the Ph.D. programs in Anthropology. We are especially interested in candidates with the potential to rebuild the subfield of Legal Anthropology as a core strength within the Department of Anthropology at NYU while establishing generative and sustainable connections with other interdisciplinary programs across campus.

Compensation:
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $90,000 - $130,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
