Reporting to the Director of the Wellness Center, the Student Psychological Counselor (SPC) will conduct intake interviews, provide short-term individual therapy (determine treatment interventions), group counseling, crisis assessment/intervention to students in need of mental health and emotional support. The Student Psychological Counselor will also provide outreach and consultative services to the multicultural and highly diverse campus community including presenting psycho-educational workshops to students and leading trainings for faculty and staff. In addition, the position requires researching and keeping abreast of Best Practices in the field of Counseling/Psychology.
The Student Psychological Counselor will have the following, additional responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with other departments to refer students in emergency situations.
- Collaborate with the Wellness Center staff to continuously evaluate policies and procedures and improve student services.
- Plan various outreach activities to familiarize the college community with the services that are available at the Wellness Center.
- Serve as a clinical and task supervisor for Mental Health Counseling graduate interns.
- Assist in the development of a crisis and threat assessment protocol.
- Monitors the status and progress of individual cases and projects; may participate in the training and of lower-level professionals.
- Collaborate with the Wellness Center staff in order to research and establish relationships with local community counseling agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required.
A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs
OR
A Master's degree in an appropriate discipline for person or psychological counseling and a New York State license as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology, or mental health counseling).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
An understanding and sensitivity to underrepresented populations and multicultural competency; clinical skills in order to assess and intervene with a wide range of disorders, concerns and degrees of pathology in treatment utilizing a time limited model; thorough knowledge and experience with providing short-term individual counseling, evaluation and crisis intervention services.
