About the Opportunity
About Northeastern
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.
Our locations—in Boston; Arlington, Charlotte, North Carolina; Miami; London; Portland, Maine; Oakland; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.
Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.
The Bouve College of Health Sciences has over 250 faculty members, with approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. It is the leading national model for education and research in the health, psychosocial and biomedical sciences and supports the University's mission of educating students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and creating and translating knowledge to meet global and societal needs.
The OHDSI Center at Northeastern
The Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) Center is Northeastern's hub for global collaborations in large-scale observational health research. The OHDSI Center's goals include founding, creating, and spinning out health-related innovation with real-world utility in life science and medicine domains. Through collaborations with academia, industry, and government worldwide, we generate study results that serve as accurate, reliable guides for healthcare decision making. As part of a central service to Northeastern, the OHDSI Center is focused on achieving a broader and stronger presence for Northeastern as an academic leader in health data sciences worldwide. Educational programs include a master's degree in Real-World Evidence and close collaborations with the Population Health PhD program.
About the Opportunity
The Department of Health Sciences and the OHDSI Center at Northeastern invite applications for the position of Research Faculty. We seek outstanding candidates with experience in either methodologic or applied research in the analysis of large-scale observational health data to improve patient outcomes and the health of populations.
This Research Faculty member will be hired at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Research Professor, according to experience. This faculty member will be responsible for managing research projects and/or people as technical leader; prepare and submit research grants to obtain funding; publish cutting edge research; mentor junior faculty, postdocs, and students as appropriate.
This position is intended to support transition into research independence. It is expected therefore to gradually move from fully, hard-funded support to a salary largely funded through soft-funded, external awards over the course of 3 years.
We welcome applicants involved across the entire pipeline of conducting observational health studies at scale, with a focus on faculty whose research areas include the use of real-world data such as health insurance billing and claims data, electronic health records, and disease/medication registries. We are particularly interested in individuals who bring expertise in topics including Bayesian methods, causal inference, global drug surveillance, pharmacoepidemiology, biostatistics, data interoperability and harmonization, data standardization, surgical and medical device epidemiology, and health economics and outcomes research for quality measures.
At Northeastern University, we embrace a culture of respect, where each person is valued for their contribution and is treated fairly. We oppose all forms of racism. We support a culture that does not tolerate any form of discrimination and where each person may belong. We strive to have a diverse membership, one where each person is trained and mentored to promote their success.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include leading and collaborating on externally funded research programs, participating in departmental, college, and university service. Opportunities to teach and mentor postdocs and students are also available. Qualified candidates must have expertise in, or a demonstrated commitment to, working with diverse student populations and/or in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.
We expect research faculty to establish and advocate for best practices in scientific reproducibility of all results, and to promote the ethical use of data and algorithms.
Qualifications
Qualifications include:
- PhD or equivalent in Statistics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics,
Data Science, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, Computer Science or
similar field.
- Expertise working with large relational databases (e.g., EHRs,
Insurance claims, Medicare) preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of analytic approaches including data
wrangling, visualization, and machine learning
preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication
skills
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills for reaching
audiences both in and out of one's own field.
