Position Description
Texas State University is seeking qualified applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor of Professional Counseling beginning Fall 2025.
This position will involve teaching, research, service, and program support in a CACREP -accredited, master’s level Professional Counseling Program in Central Texas. This position is focused on a faculty member for our Clinical Mental Health Counseling ( CMHC ) degree track.
Specific responsibilities will include teaching courses leading to licensure in professional counseling, maintaining an active and productive program of research, engaging in external funding submissions, and providing service to the program, department, university, and profession.
This position will include teaching core courses in our counseling program, with a particular focus on teaching Clinical Practicum, Counseling Diverse Populations, Career Counseling, Assessment, and other CMHC courses as needed. The successful candidate will be headquartered on the main university campus in San Marcos and will teach courses on both the main university campus in San Marcos and at the university’s Round Rock campus.
The Professional Counseling Program is CACREP -accredited in three specialty areas: Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling; and School Counseling. Texas State University is a student-centered Hispanic Serving Institution of more than 38,000 students. The university holds a Carnegie classification of Doctoral University-High Research Activity and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain eligibility as a Research-1 (R1) university by elevating its national research profile. Texas State University is located along the beautiful San Marcos River. San Marcos is in the center of the innovation corridor, 30 minutes south of Austin and 60 minutes north of San Antonio, and is rich in vibrant and eclectic communities.

Required Qualifications
Required qualifications for Assistant Professor rank:
• An earned doctorate in Counselor Education from a CACREP -accredited program by employment date of hire.
• A record of, or the demonstration of the potential for, research and publication at the national and/or international levels
• A record of, or the demonstration of the potential for, securing external funding for research
• A professional clinical license (e.g., Licensed Professional Counselor [ LPC ]) or a provisional clinical license (e.g., LPC Associate) with a plan in place to complete the professional license in the State of Texas within two years
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications for Assistant Professor rank:
• A documented record of securing external funding for research
• Experience teaching core courses in a CACREP -accredited program in the teaching areas listed above
• Designation as a clinical supervisor (e.g., LPC -S) and experience providing clinical supervision in an academic setting
