Job Description:
The Textile/Surface Design Department, in the School of Art and Design, seeks a detail-oriented Weaving Classroom Assistant to join our team. This position provides support to our students under the supervision of the course instructor, ensuring a smooth learning experience in the weaving studios. Duties include but are not limited to the following: working with individuals and groups of students as they practice required textile skills; assisting students with troubleshooting, loom set up, and weaving of projects; fixing and maintaining all looms; organizing and maintaining studios; consult and communicate with instructor on loom maintenance and student progress; maintaining/creating records pertaining to weaving studios and developing loom time sign-up calendar. The Classroom Assistant will participate and offer recommendations in team and department meetings as needed.
Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
- Prepare classrooms and looms for scheduled weaving classes.
- Assist teaching staff with demonstration lessons and practical knowledge
- Provide one-on-one guidance to students on weaving techniques, loom operation, troubleshooting, and technical construction help for projects.
- Analyze problems, make suggestions, and resolve, working in consultation with the instructor.
- Provide one-on-one guidance to students on woven structures introduced in class.
- Maintain and organize studios, weaving supplies, yarns, and equipment.
- Assist students during open studios and with senior projects.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair looms and weaving equipment.
- Organize, create, and maintain loom weaving sign up times and studio schedules.
- Create written documents for student instructions and troubleshooting guides for various equipment, including photos.
- Assess yarn inventory and make suggestions for color and style; communicate with suppliers to obtain quotes.
- Communicate with suppliers to manage maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
- Display student work in showcases and/or assist with organizing and hanging shows to display student work.

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Textile Design, Textile Development, or a related field.
- 2-4 years of business experience, including at least one year of hand weaving experience either professionally for fabrication or as personal fiber arts work.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Expertise in set-up, operation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of handlooms and computer-interfaced dobby looms.
- Working knowledge and experience with varied loom types including table looms and floor looms. Additional experience with AVL compu-dobby looms is preferred.
- Strong understanding of 8 harness weaving structures.
- Experience with complex dobby structures and looms up to 24 harnesses is preferred.
- Assist students independently with loom preparation, troubleshooting, and technical help for projects.
- Analyze problems and recommend solutions.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to maintain accurate records and a neat and orderly weaving studio.
- Familiarity with textile terminology and materials.
- Proficiency in computer-aided design software for woven textiles such as Pointcarre or equivalent professional software preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Google Docs, spreadsheets, google calendar preferred.
- Ability to constantly sit, stand, bend, frequently walk and lift 10lbs or less; occasionally move looms with assistance.

Salary
Salary Range: $52.59 - $56.36 per hour; commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The UCE-FIT Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
dictates the compensation, benefits, and conditions of employment.
Hiring Rate: $52.59 per hour with step increments per Salary
Schedule 85.

Days/Hours: M-F, 22 hours per week; in-person; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.
