Having recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, ChE is among the oldest chemical engineering departments with a long tradition of excellence in research and education. Today, ChE has 26 core T&TT faculty members, 9 affiliated faculty, 2 full-time teaching faculty, 34 staff, 200 PhD students, and 300 undergraduate students (sophomore-junior-senior). The University of Michigan is renowned for and distinguished by its comprehensive excellence and we greatly value interdisciplinary collaborative research. Ranked 7th in US News and World Report, Michigan ChE is a leader in developing equitable engineering solutions and promoting multifaceted research to address society’s greatest and most complex challenges. Please explore the ChE website to learn more about our strategic research vision, breadth, depth, and quality of our research.

Our department is committed to a people-first approach to chemical engineering, grounded in a clearly articulated set of values, while shaping the future of chemical engineering through excellence and leadership in research and education.  We aspire to develop the next generation of engineers whose empathy, insight, knowledge, and drive enable them to translate ideas and discoveries into equitable engineering solutions. Our aspirations align with the people-first strategic vision of Michigan Engineering, and the University of Michigan’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).  We seek to recruit and retain a diverse workforce that reflects these commitments.

The successful candidate for Department Chair will be an exceptional, world-class scholar with a distinguished track record in chemical engineering and will have an exemplary record of achievement and impact in research, teaching, and service at a level commensurate with the appointment as a tenured full professor. The candidate must possess demonstrated leadership abilities, a bold vision for chemical engineering, a broad appreciation for a diversity of backgrounds, experiences and the perspectives, a strong interest in mentoring, a desire to promote impactful research across all areas of ChE, and the aspiration to continue ChE’s ascent to one of the world’s elite chemical engineering programs. The candidate will ensure that learning of the highest quality flourishes at all levels, from undergraduate education to graduate and postdoctoral research. The candidate will work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and administrators to achieve common goals and to maintain rapport with alumni and industry representatives.

Applicants should electronically submit a cover letter, detailed curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, and diversity statement.  In addition, applicants are asked to submit a two-page vision for the department that describes how the candidate will advance the ChE program.  Applicants should be prepared to share a list of names and contact information for at least five references upon being shortlisted.

The deadline for ensuring full consideration of an application is November 15, 2024, but the position will remain open, and applications will continue to be considered until the position is filled. The search will be conducted in confidence until finalists are identified prior to a public campus visit.
