Job Details
Writers Room is a university-community literary arts program engaged in creative placemaking and art for social justice. A center within Drexel’s University and Community Partnership unit, Writers Room began its co-created programming in 2014 at the Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships, Drexel’s urban extension center in West Philadelphia. For ten years, Writers Room has built partnerships with Philadelphia cultural organizations and brought students, faculty, staff, and alumni together with local residents for productive conversation through a range of programs—from side-by-side classes, to monthly writing workshops, and cultural events.
The Lindy Center for Civic Engagement designs and leads training workshops for Drexel and other Philadelphia-area faculty in community-based learning (CBL) pedagogy and course design for nearly a decade. It supports faculty developing CBL courses across seven schools and colleges at Drexel, with partners from Drexel’s local neighborhood, the broader Philadelphia region, and global partners around the world. The Lindy Center currently supports six faculty fellowships in engaged research, community-based global learning, partnership development, creative arts and practices, and faculty resources in CBL.
Job Summary
The adjunct co-instructor will participate in Drexel’s established model of community-engaged and experiential learning through courses offered as a Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) course, in which students not only learn and discuss concepts in class but also put them into practice by engaging with each other and their communities and reflecting on the deeper meanings of their classroom and community experiences.
These courses associated with the UnMapping project invite instructors to develop new, interdisciplinary, public-facing courses that bring multi-genre literature, writing, and critical scholarship into meaningful conversation with local issues and contexts extending the study of literature beyond the university classroom.
This position is grant-funded.
