Job Description
The Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy and the Truman School of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Missouri invite applications for an open-rank hire in American politics (assistant, associate, or full professor level), with ability to focus on Missouri. Candidates with different concentrations and methodological backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to American political development (APD), state and local politics, campaigns and elections, courts/judicial politics, and political parties.
A background in Missouri politics prior to hiring is desirable but not mandatory. Once hired, however, the successful candidate will need to devote a significant portion of their work to Missouri politics. Examples of such engagement could include teaching undergraduate courses on Missouri politics; participating in the Truman School's Legislative Academy for incoming Missouri State legislators; collaborating with local civic groups, museums, archival repositories, and other such entities; promoting experiential opportunities for undergraduate and MA students (such as internships and study abroad); public engagement such as media interviews and talks with community organizations. Publishing on Missouri politics is encouraged, but not mandatory.
Missouri’s Kinder Institute is an interdisciplinary, signature academic center connected to the History Department and Truman School of Government and Public Affairs. Proudly non-partisan and committed to empowering students of all backgrounds and viewpoints, it is dedicated to excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement in history, political thought, and institutions, with a particular emphasis on the ideas and events surrounding the creation of the United States and their continued global impact and relevance today. The Kinder Institute houses many thriving programs, including a BA in Constitutional Democracy, an MA in Atlantic History and Politics, and research connections and study abroad initiatives with Oxford University and the University of the Western Cape. In addition, the Kinder Institute sponsors graduate and postdoctoral fellowships in History and Political Science.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Political Science or related field is required by time of appointment.
Candidates will be evaluated on their track-record of academic publication (or show promise for developing one) alongside demonstrated teaching experience and/or potential in political science.
