Job Description:

Budget Title: Instructional Support Associate (SL-2)

Salary: Commensurate with experience

The mission of the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts is to enhance the local community and support Binghamton University's educational vision through the presentation of multiculturally significant national and international performances, and varied regional and state events. The Anderson Center is home to the 1170-seat Osterhout Concert Theater, the 400-seat Chamber Hall, and the 558-seat Watters Theater. One of the Southern Tier's premier artistic institutions, the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts provides Binghamton University students and members of the surrounding community with an opportunity to experience a wide array of cultural programming at an affordable cost. Since raising the curtain for the first time in 1985, the multi-theater complex has welcomed nearly two million visitors to campus for concerts, theatrical productions, lectures, dance recitals, student showcases, and more.

The Assistant Technical Director will assist the Technical Director, or in the absence of the Technical Director act as the Technical Director, in the operation and planning for the Anderson Center complex. These functions include:

Lighting
  • Set-up: Must be able to set up conventional and intelligent moving light fixtures. Must have experience in the addressing and operation of intelligent fixtures. Must have experience in configuring multi-universe lighting control networks. Must be familiar with DMX/ACN lighting control protocols.
  • Focus: Work with the Anderson Center Technical Director, independently or with outside guests in the implementation and execution of the lighting design concept.
  • Running of shows: Needs to be proficient in the operation/programming of ETC line of lighting consoles. Depending on the needs of the production, one must be able to act as a Lighting Director, Programmer, or Master Electrician. Troubleshoots computerized lighting systems as problems develop. Needs to have a thorough knowledge of various computerized lighting systems and methods to translate the designer concept into programmed steps and special effects as needed for each production.
Sound and Acoustical System
  • Set-up: Analyze and determine acoustical requirements for each presentation. Need to be able to select the proper type and placement of microphones as well as the location of all monitor and performance loudspeakers. Experience with analog and digital sound console routing is a plus.
  • Running of shows: Experience is necessary in the running of a multiple input/output console to achieve a faithful reproduction of both stage or musical production for reinforcement and/or recording purposes.
Video
  • Setup: Experience with networking and control of video/streaming equipment. Knowledge of hardware and software for live digital video. Analyze and determine what the needs are of each user and implement them.
  • Running of events: Experience with live recording and streaming of events. Work with the Anderson Center Technical Director, independently or with outside guests in the implementation and execution of video for an event.
Stage Work
  • Set-ups: Needs to have a thorough knowledge of staging and construction techniques, to be able to evaluate and assist in planning, layout, and executing various types of performances (dance, chamber music, orchestra, and particularly packaged touring companies).
  • Rigging: Provides all users a thorough knowledge and necessary training of safe rigging practices for the various types of systems used within the theaters: T-track, hemp, and winch systems. Must be proficient with several fastening techniques using either knots or mechanical connectors for both hemp and wire rope to ensure a safe working and performing facility in an often dangerous environment.
Supervision
  • Student productions: Supervision of student productions is often very encompassing as it must provide to these groups a stage manager, lighting designer, and/or a sound engineer to ensure that these productions flow smoothly and competently so that the audience sees a first-rate production that these groups can be proud of.
  • Outside productions: Direct supervision with, or independently of, the Anderson Center Technical Director of all productions within the Center. Must be able to provide to any group supervision of any or all technical elements or equipment available within the Center's sophisticated array of facilities.
Organization and Maintenance
  • Equipment: Assists in the inventory control and maintenance of stage lighting fixtures, computerized lighting, and sound consoles, and associated equipment throughout the three-theater complex.
  • Supplies: helps track the use of expendable supplies and recommends appropriate reordering and restocking of repair parts.
  • Show paperwork: Assists in the review of production contracts and meeting notes to prepare for incoming shows and artists. Helps analyze crew requirements, equipment allocations, and production costs. Will examine designer drawings to determine time and space requirements as well as possible conflicts. Assists in determining the final costs and/or billing charges to be processed.

Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree or higher
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in a similar position
  • Work as a team member in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to train individuals of various levels of proficiency
  • Experience in fast-paced live stage production work handling multiple theatrical systems
  • Ability to work comfortably at height on a ladder, Genie lifts, and catwalks.
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently.
  • Ability to supervise student and Union stagehand crews.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes day, evening, and weekend hours
  • Be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Proficient in one or more of the following areas: Lighting, Live Sound, Video Operation
Preferred:
  • Bachelors degree or higher, with a concentration in technical theater
  • ETCP/OSHA certifications are a plus
