Position Summary

The Department of Religion at the University of Georgia invites applicants for the position of Lecturer in Arabic to begin August 1, 2025. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track appointment. The teaching load is four courses per semester. Duties include coordinating the Arabic language degree programs and teaching introductory, intermediate, and advanced Arabic language courses.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Applications should include a cover letter, CV, a sample syllabus (upload as document #1), and a representative sample of teaching evaluations -3 page max (upload as document #2), and a portfolio with a statement of teaching methodology and philosophy (2 page max), including a discussion of the applicant’s preferred textbook series for Modern Standard Arabic. We currently use Brustad et al., Al-Kitaab (without its colloquial dimension) for the three-year sequence of our Arabic minor and major BA program.

Applicants will also be asked to provide three contacts for three confidential letters of recommendation, at least one of which should address the candidate’s teaching record, preferably from the candidate’s principal teaching supervisor. Letters will be requested later in the search process.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Arabic Language or Literature, Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language, or a related field.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship. Applicants must have their degree in hand at the time of appointment. Candidates with a non-terminal degree must document exceptional accomplishments in their field or in the teaching of Arabic language and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • Native or near-native fluency in both Arabic and English.
  • Three years of experience teaching Modern Standard Arabic for non-native speakers at the undergraduate level with a record of teaching excellence.
  • An M.A. in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language is desirable but not required.

  • Strong commitment to effective language pedagogy, teaching supervision, and mentorship.
