Outreach & Engagement Librarian

The University Libraries at Colgate University invite applications for an Outreach and Engagement Librarian, beginning in late 2024 or early 2025. The Outreach and Engagement Librarian position serves as a primary point of contact between the Libraries’ services and the Division of University Studies , which is the academic home of the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum , the Department of Writing and Rhetoric, and many of the interdisciplinary programs at Colgate University. This position also supports other academic departments and programs, as needed, and contributes to the University's mission to provide a demanding, expansive educational experience to a select group of diverse, talented, intellectually sophisticated students who are capable of challenging themselves, their peers, and their teachers in a setting that brings together living and learning. In this role, teaching is the first responsibility, serving not only to transmit knowledge but also to transform and extend it through a rigorous, imaginative curriculum. In addition to library instruction, research consultation with students will also be a primary form of contact for this position. As a primary point of contact for faculty, staff, and students, this position will develop the collections in consultation with faculty members, advocate for library services within the division, and communicate library initiatives and updates to division directors and department chairs. In addition, this position serves as a member of the Libraries’ outreach and engagement team, which engages in inclusive, collaborative, critical, and creative pedagogies to foster information literacy and inspire intellectual curiosity. As library faculty, it is expected that someone in this role will engage in University service and sustain a record of professional service and scholarship in the field of Library and Information Science.

• Actively engages in creating and sustaining pedagogical collaborations with faculty members.
• Open and available to students and faculty for research consultations.
• Creates strategic partnerships within the division and communicates regularly with division directors, department chairs, and faculty members.
• In collaboration with members of the collection services team, develop collections to reflect the curricular needs of our students and research needs of our faculty, with an understanding of the need for diverse voices in the collection in a diversity of formats.
• Actively engages in University and library committees, task forces, and working groups as necessary.
• Collaborates and communicates with members of the outreach and engagement team to create new modalities of instruction, outreach opportunities to students and faculty, and innovative approaches to course and subject guides.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the University Librarian.
• Reports to the associate director of the Outreach and Engagement department.
• The minimum starting salary is $61,000. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree from ALA-accredited institution or equivalent.
• Evidence of successful teaching experience.
• Successful experience providing public services for underserved communities.
• Strong commitment to core concepts related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), with an awareness of current DEI issues in the library and information science profession and related fields.
• Experience with information resources used in academic libraries.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
• Ability and desire to work both collaboratively and independently.
• Evidence of initiative, creativity, and resourcefulness.
• Commitment to professional development, especially regarding pedagogy, DEI, and technology.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least one year of experience teaching information literacy at the post-secondary level.
• Successful experience collaborating with faculty in other departments on information literacy instruction and collection development.
• Understanding a variety of assessment techniques and trends in library instruction.
• Experience collaborating with tutoring, writing, disability services, and other student support centers.
• Successful experience collaborating on multi-department, cross-organizational initiatives.
