- Drew University is seeking a Seasonal Weekend Boiler
Operator in the Facilities Department . This is a
part-time, seasonal weekend position. Employee will be responsible
for the continuous, reliable and safe operation of all University
building hot water and low-pressure steam boiler plants and
associated heating systems. Primary duties will include monitoring
boiler performance, conducting routine inspections, performing
preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions.
Additional duties may be assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain single and multiple fuel-fired water and/or fire tube boilers and associated auxiliary equipment at the central heating plant as well as all other building boiler plants
- Adjusts fuel feeds and the volume and velocity of draft and other firebox variables to achieve maximum combustion efficiency with changing load demands or variations in fuel quality and regularly observes and notes readings on gauges, meters, detectors, recorders, boiler water level indicators, and computer generated and analog displays to detect danger signals in operations
- Does water testing and performs blow-downs as needed for all low-pressure steam boilers
- Maintains documentation regarding EPA, DEP, state, and local codes for compliance
- Completes campus boiler plant rounds in all required campus properties throughout the shift
- Makes logbook entries and conducts maintenance
- Check, record, and report fuel and water levels
- Run weekly Veeder Root report
- Perform minor pipe repairs
- Replace worn parts, including valves, filters and traps
- Keeps boiler and machine rooms safe and clean
- Inspects to ensure proper operation of and fills water softeners around campus
- Maintain correct boiler parts inventory
- Other types of work outside of boiler operations may be assigned, such as basic painting and ceiling tile replacement
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 5-10 years of experience in boiler operations
- New Jersey Black Seal low-pressure boiler operator license
- Valid US Driver’s License
- New Jersey Underground Storage Tank Operator Certification preferred
- Familiar with building automation systems preferred
- Able to communicate through computer email, telephone, two-way radio systems, and cell phone
- Normal mobility to move around campus and campus buildings
- Able to bend, stoop, twist, climb up and down ladders
- Able to lift and carry 50 pounds, including up and down stairs
- Strong English written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required
- The employee is subject to outside environmental conditions
- Able to understand plans, design specifications, and manufacturer's instructions
- Competency in using tools and operating equipment
- A US driver’s license is required; able to drive an automobile, van, light truck, or utility vehicle.
- Knowledge of safe operating procedures, such as Lock Out / Tag Out
- Ability to understand and apply professional industry standards for installation, repairs, and safety
- Ability to operate power tools and equipment
- Ability to operate computer-based equipment
- Adaptability to work in a diverse environment, focusing on customer satisfaction under high-stress conditions, and organizing an effective response to day-to-day requirements and one-of-a-kind extreme situations
- Knowledge of the operating practices of preventive maintenance
