The Advanced Academic Programs Office of Student Affairs in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University is seeking an energetic, organized, and motivated individual to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment focused on student programming, orientation, and student development as an Assistant Director for Student Engagement.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Services, this role encourages active involvement in campus life (in-person and online), encourages and mentors effective student organizations, guides emerging and experienced student leaders, and implements large-scale student programs and orientation. The Assistant Director will design, implement, and assess programs with a goal of fostering an inclusive and engaging environment for graduate students. Evening and weekend hours are expected.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Programming 85%


Student Affairs (55%)

  • Create social, cultural, and educational programming that compliments the academic curriculum and serves the graduate student body in-person and online.
  • Working with the Associate Director of Student Affairs, assist in the development and implementation of events, such as Welcome Week and end of semester stress reduction activities.
  • Collaborate with Life Design, Alumni Relations, and AAP Faculty and Events to deliver programming.
  • Co-create and implement activities and events to increase networking opportunities for all students.
  • Assist in managing collaborative partnerships with AAP colleagues, as well as student affairs colleagues in Carey School of Business, School of Advanced International Studies and Homewood Student Affairs departments.
  • Support and advise representatives from cultural and affinity-based student organizations as they plan and implement events.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and diversity and inclusion offices to create and promote events.
  • Participate in professional organizations related to student activities, such as NACA.
  • Represent Student Affairs for open houses and campus-wide committees as needed.
  • Assist in the development and implementing of learning outcomes and evaluation strategies; collect and disseminate data and reports on program goals and outcomes.
  • Research best practices and peer institutions to evaluate program offerings and identify areas of potential growth.


Student Organizations (30%)

  • Coordinate and support division and student organization sponsored programs.
  • Advise the AAP Student Advisory Group, the division’s student governance group and student programming board.
  • Serve as the point of contact for registered student organizations, including the AAP Student Advisory Group, and provide guidance on club/organization management, event planning, goal setting, budget requests and programming development.
  • Provide budget preparation support and leadership training with special attention to risk management, inclusive programming, and fiscal responsibility. Attend meetings and events.


Communication 5%

  • Publicize and work with the marketing team to design and implement marketing of AAP Student Affairs sponsored events and programs.
  • Assist in maintaining and managing the student events calendar.
  • Regularly update the various constituents of the program (AAP Student Affairs team, faculty, campus partners, etc.)


Administrative 10%

  • Develop and maintain guidance, procedures, and tools for event planning.
  • Ensure appropriate procedures, insurance, waivers, security, financial safeguards, and best practices are utilized to promote safe programs and activities.
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the Student Affairs team to support departmental initiatives and address student needs.
  • Work with Associate Director of Student Affairs to project programming/events and student organization needs for annual budget.
  • Manage and reconcile procurement card.
  • Enter transactions into SAP, including check requests, cost transfers, and shopping carts.
  • Meet with student leaders to support program development, including vendor and service procurement, navigating campus logistics and systems, and workflow contract submissions.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.

  • Light physical activity: lift and carry 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 40 pounds occasionally.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or related area.
  • Three years of relevant advising experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in higher education, student affairs, educational leadership, or related area of study.
  • Previous student activities, event, and programming experience.
  • Previous experience working with international students.
  • Previous experience working with online student populations.
  • Knowledge of graduate student development.

Starting Salary Range: $55,800 - $97,600 Annually ($75,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

Schedule: M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasional evenings and weekends to accommodate special events are required.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
