Job Details
As part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University is seeking a position for Director of Exercise and Sports Science Department to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by guiding the development and implementation of programs within the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Marian University seeks applications for a full-time, 12-month Director of the Department of Exercise and Sports Science (ESS), as soon as January 2025, but no later than August 2025. The faculty rank is negotiable based on prior experience. The candidate should have expertise in teaching various topics in exercise and sports sciences including exercise physiology (clinical and applied), biomechanics, motor behavior, sports psychology or sport nutrition. The candidate should be strongly interested in teaching, advising, and mentoring students. The candidate should be qualified to mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in research and scholarly activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of
Marian University by modeling the
Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through
transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and
institutional policies. - Utilize expertise to teach undergraduate and graduate students in various exercise science courses.
- Develop courses and curricula at the post-secondary level.
- Advise students on their academic progress and intended career
paths.
- Actively participate in year around student recruitment and retention.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research and scholarly activities.
- Manage the administrative responsibilities related to the academic program.
- Administration and oversight of the general operation of the department.
- Lead departmental initiatives in curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation to maintain high-quality educational experiences.
- Engage in faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation.
- Organize departmental professional development including
mentorship of full-time faculty, department
adjuncts and graduate teaching assistants. - Engage in professional membership and service (e.g. American College of Sports Medicine).

To be qualified for this position, the candidate must have a terminal (Ph.D. or other doctoral level) degree in an
area related to exercise and sports science, and a record of sustained intellectual and professional scholarly
achievement. A qualified candidate will have a contemporary knowledge of exercise science and promoting
academic excellence.
Preference will be given to those with a history of excellence teaching and lecturing to a wide variety of students at
the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, experience collaborating with professional programs (OT, PT,
etc.) in curricular pathways and research activities is preferred. The ideal candidate will express an ability and
willingness to utilize the ESS laboratory and university-wide resources to facilitate undergraduate and graduate
research.
