Chief Online Learning Officer

St. John's University

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Provost, the Chief Online Learning Officer (COLO) handles the comprehensive management and strategic direction of St. John's University's online learning initiatives. This role requires collaboration with Deans, departmental chairs, faculty, and the Office of Information Technology to deliver high-quality online education that enhances student learning and engagement. The COLO fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, advocating for policies and resources that support online education and establishing strategic partnerships to expand and enhance the university's online offerings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership:

    • Develop and implement a comprehensive online learning strategy that aligns with the university's mission and goals.

    • Identify and integrate innovative technologies and pedagogical approaches to meet the learning needs of students and institutional objectives.

    • Stay informed of trends in online education to keep the university at the forefront of digital learning.

  • Program Development and Management:

    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the online learning division.

    • Guide the design, development, and management of online programs and courses, ensuring they meet quality standards and are accessible to all students.

    • Collaborate with academic deans, staff, IT professionals, and external partners to deliver high-quality, accessible, and innovative online education.

  • Budgeting & Financial Planning:

    • Manage budgets and resources effectively.

    • Oversee administrative operations for the online learning division, ensuring efficient use of resources and compliance with institutional policies and regulations.

  • Technology Oversight:

    • Partner with technology and academic affairs teams regarding the implementation, use, and evaluation of learning management systems (LMS) and other educational technologies.

    • Ensure that these technologies are scalable, user-friendly, and enhance the student learning experience.

    • Integrate emerging trends and innovative approaches into the online learning environment.

  • Team Management:

    • Oversee online technology and support team members.

  • Professional Development:

    • Promote and provide training and support for faculty in online teaching methodologies and technologies.

    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in online pedagogy and curriculum development.

  • Student Support and Engagement:

    • Develop strategies to support online learners, including orientation, advising, and access to resources.

    • Promote student engagement, satisfaction, and academic success through robust online support services.

  • Collaboration with Marketing and Enrollment:

    • Work closely with marketing and enrollment leadership to promote and grow online programs.

  • Partnership Development:

    • Establish strategic partnerships with other educational institutions, corporations, and organizations to expand and enhance online learning opportunities.

  • Data Analytics:

    • Use data analytics to assess the effectiveness of online programs and courses.

    • Inform strategic decisions and drive improvements in student outcomes, engagement, satisfaction, and success.

    Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Doctorate degree in Education, Instructional Technology, or a related field.

  • Experience:

    • A minimum of 10 years of experience in online learning and higher education administration.

    • Proven leadership and management skills with a track record of successful online program development and implementation.

  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of instructional design principles, online pedagogy, and educational technologies.

    • Proficiency in learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas).

    • Expertise in online course development and instructional design.

    • Familiarity with data analytics and assessment tools in education.

    • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

    • Ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously.

    • Strong commitment to innovation and excellence in online education.

    In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $175,000 - $200,000. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

    This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
