About the Job
The Department of French & Italian maintains a pool of lecturers and teaching specialists to teach French and Italian courses, mostly lower-division language skills courses, that cannot be staffed by regular faculty or graduate teaching assistants. These positions may be full- or part-time for fall or spring semesters, and summer. These positions are for day, evening, or a combination of day/evening courses, taught on a semester basis. Salary range is competitive based upon qualifications.
Duties and responsibilities: Teach assigned language classes/sections; keep office hours; prepare course materials; engage in curriculum development; prepare and grade exams; and participate in program meetings as appropriate. Teaching one course per semester is 34%; teaching two courses per semester is 68%, teaching two courses and assisting with another course is 84%, teaching three courses per semester is 100%.
This does not constitute a posting for vacancies, but establishes a pool of applicants should openings occur during the academic year. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICAIONS
M.A. or foreign equivalent in French, Italian, or related area. Native or near-native fluency in French or Italian.
Strong English language communication skills
University-level teaching experience in French or Italian language.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICAIONS
Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in French, Italian, or related area.
Two or more years of university-level teaching experience in French or Italian language.
Candidates with a Masters degree will be appointed as Teaching Specialist; candidates with a Ph.D. will be appointed as Lecturer.

The Department of French and Italian is dedicated to the creation and transmission of knowledge concerning the languages, literatures, and cultures of France, Italy, and the Francophone world. The Department promotes original research, creative teaching and advising, and public service in French, Francophone, and Italian Studies. We expect that all faculty will be actively engaged in these three components of the Department’s mission, namely, research, teaching, and service. We value distinguished research and teaching, as well as the dissemination of knowledge about France, Italy, and the Francophone world. We offer programs leading to the B.A. in French and in Italian, and the M.A. and Ph.D. in French.
