Job Description:
The Senior Director of Counseling and Student Accessibility will lead and oversee the administration of the Counseling Center and Student Accessibility Services. Counseling Services provides confidential, evidence-based mental health counseling, consultation, and crisis intervention services that promote the well-being to students experiencing personal, social, and emotional difficulties that may impede functioning and academic progress. Student Accessibility Services oversees academic and out of class accommodations for students and abides by the American with Disabilities Act and other related regulations. This position will work closely with team members from our medical and health promotion colleagues, Eagle Achievement Center, Residential Life, and others within Student Affairs, along with faculty, and staff from across the campus.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership of student counseling services and student accessibility services to address the needs of Coppin State University students
- Provide direct supervision to the staff in both Counseling Services and Student Accessibility Services including hiring, training, and evaluating performance
- Oversee on-going training and maintaining of appropriate licensure of staff within Counseling Services and Student Accessibility Services
- Partner across the institution to identify and advance strategic priorities of the division and university
- Develop communications and marketing to ensure students are aware of the services of both the Counseling Center and Student Accessibility Services
- Ensure compliance to Americans with Disability Act and applicable amendments and Rehabilitation Act requirements state and federally
- Oversee and maintain a system for assessment, evaluation, and recommendations of accommodations for students with disabilities
- Oversee a testing system for students needing supervised testing through accommodation
- Conduct assessments of at-risk clients, consult on medical leave protocol, initiate emergency evaluation process, and make appropriate referrals if necessary
- Develop and support collaboration with the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, the Dean of Students Office, Health Services, Eagle Achievement Center, Residential Life, Public Safety, Athletics, faculty, and other constituents as needed
- Develop, manage, and maintain the outreach program at the Counseling Center. Create, coordinate, and conduct outreach efforts to raise awareness about relevant mental health topics (suicide, stress management, etc.) Conduct training seminars for faculty, staff, and students focusing on relevant mental health topics. Assess the efficacy of interventions and programming.
- Communicate with the campus community as necessary to inform of issues and trends relevant to the development and success of students around mental health concerns
- May provide direct services in Counseling Center or Student Accessibility Services based on office needs and candidate experience
- Actively participate in various professional activities and pursuits to remain current in the field and maintain requirements for certification/licensure
- Respond to campus emergencies as needed in a rotating on-call capacity; fulfill duties as prescribed in the Student Death Protocol
- Maintain client records in a manner consistent with best practices for clinical counseling and disability services, and generate reports about students served
- Oversee the campus Food Pantry and BAT (Behavioral Assessment Team) efforts. Other committee services as needed.
- At least 6 years’ experience in a college counseling center and/or student disability services
- At least 3 years supervision experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of Section 504 of Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and all amendments.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; exceptional organization and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships and build consensus and support.
- Sensitivity to issues related to socioeconomic class, gender identity and expression, sexuality, race and ethnicity, privilege and power relationships, and transitions to adulthood.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for programming elements of the position
- Knowledge of best practices in the counseling services and student accommodation/disability services.
- Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision.
- Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions.
- Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research and gather information.
- Maintain regular attendance and closely follows office reporting policies and procedures.
