Job Description

The University Library at Nevada State University is seeking applications for the position of Library Specialist - Electronic Resources and Interlibrary Loan. Reporting directly to the Dean of the Library, the ideal candidate will contribute to a forward-thinking team committed to redefining the role of the university library. The Specialist ensures the accessibility, affordability, and effective management of library resources and services. This role is expected to oversee electronic resources holdings, manage interlibrary loan and resource sharing, manage cataloging and metadata, support textbook affordability initiatives, and handle rotational assignments such as service desk management and accounting processes.

Nevada State supports flexible working options as outlined in the university's Alternative Work Arrangement Policy. Library team members typically telecommute two days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

Electronic Resources and Holdings Management
  • Manages the workflows for importing batch records from various sources including outsourced cataloging vendors, OCLC WorldShare, and other vendors, in coordination with the Electronic Resources Librarian.
  • Applies customer service expertise to communicate with publishers, vendors, and users to resolve access problems to electronic resources.
  • Performs technical troubleshooting requiring the knowledge of content platforms, web services, and applications.
  • Identifies more complex problems and refers them to the Dean of the Library, the Electronic Resources Librarian, or to ITS personnel as appropriate.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in electronic resource platforms, URLs, and other changes.
  • Applies necessary changes to effectively update and maintain user access.


Interlibrary Loan and Resource Sharing Management
  • Reviews, documents, analyzes, and evaluates activities, workflows, and policies to establish priorities and assess the effectiveness of Interlibrary Loan services.
  • Manages the interlibrary borrowing and lending request process using various online systems and responds to patron queries.
  • Verifies citation and location information for materials using both electronic and print sources.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of request methods, holdings, and relevant delivery arrangements as they apply to specific user groups.
  • Communicate policies and procedures to users; creates resource sharing documentation.


Cataloging and Metadata Management
  • Manages the selection of bibliographic records for library materials in a variety of formats, using judgment to select the best available bibliographic record; search WorldCat through OCLC WorldShare Record Manager; verify bibliographic details.
  • Manages the physical processing of new library materials, added copies and volumes, replacements, and rebound materials: assigning, printing, and affixing correct identifiers and labels.
  • Manages a variety of collection maintenance tasks: withdrawal of outdated library materials; transfer library materials as needed; prep materials for cataloging; supports inventory control and maintains accountability for anatomical models and computer equipment; responsible for maintaining statistical records of materials added and withdrawn and supplies for cataloging and processing.
  • Performs minor repairs and in-house binding.
  • Streamlines processes for metadata cleanup and provides support for metadata transformation using remediation tools such as MarcEdit.


Textbook Affordability Management
  • Manages the discovery and adoption of library-licensed ebooks as required textbooks in Nevada State course sections.
  • Manages and maintains a sustainable workflow for capturing textbook affordability conversions and metrics.


Rotational Assignments: Service Desk Management, Oversee Accounting Processes
  • In the absence of primary staff member/s, oversees service desk management and accounting processes.


Training and Professional Development
  • Engages proactively in professional training opportunities, departmental meetings, functions, and events.
  • Continuously updates and enhances knowledge and skills in both primary and backup responsibilities.
  • Recognizes areas for improvement and pursues targeted solutions to strengthen skills with appropriate guidance.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven experience in quickly learning new skills and technologies.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Recent relevant library experience, especially in electronic resources management, interlibrary loan management, or cataloging and metadata management.


Salary & Benefits

Budgeted salary range for this position is $55,500-$56,000. Nevada State University offers excellent benefits, including 17.50% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, and three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. Tuition discounts are available at Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) schools for employees, spouses, domestic partners, and dependents.
