Job Details
Established in 1865, the George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in the nation’s capital and one of the most prestigious law schools in the country. GW Law is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. GW Law is situated in the tree-laden downtown Washington, DC neighborhood familiarly known as Foggy Bottom. GW Law’s Center for Law and Technology (GWCLT) oversees and coordinates two of the law school’s preeminent programs: (i) Intellectual Property Law (IP), and (ii) Privacy and Technology Law (PT). GWCLT currently serves J.D., LL.M., S.J.D., and M.S.L. students in the area of IP Law, and J.D. students in the area of PT Law. The IP and PT programs are individually managed but form the GWCLT together. The PT program combined full-time and adjunct faculty teach over 20 courses in privacy and technology law each academic. These courses include foundational courses such as Information Privacy Law, Cybersecurity Law and Policy, Internet Law, and Artificial Intelligence Law to a wide array of advanced courses and seminars on specialized topics including Consumer Protection Law, Computer Crime, Blockchain Law and Global Privacy. Our full-time faculty have published extensive scholarship in the area of Privacy and Technology Law.
The Privacy and Technology Law Program enjoys a strong relationship with other law schools, Associations, federal agencies, law firms, corporations, and other professional organizations / communities engaged in privacy and technology law The PT Program sponsors and supports two student-managed law journal, The George Washington University Journal for Law and Technology (JOLT) and the Federal Communications Law Journal (FCLJ). Many of GW Law’s J.D. and LL.M. students come to GW Law from across the United States as well as from distant countries.
The GWCLT, including the PT program, produces a broad range of conferences, lectures, and scholarship in the area of privacy and technology law and related topics.
The Assistant Dean for Privacy and Technology Law’s duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Educate students in the field of privacy and technology law and support those seeking careers in the field:
• Maintain appropriate curricular offerings taking into consideration faculty guidance, sound pedagogical principles, student interests, and employment trends.
• Identify, recommend for hire, and support adjunct faculty as needed to meet curricular goals. Review adjunct faculty course evaluations each semester and address any concerns identified (which may include consultation or referral to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs).
• Provide academic and career advising to students, both one-on-one and by making available timely and accessible information about course offerings and academic and career development through group events, publications, or other means.
• Administer the Recognition of a JD Concentration in Privacy, Data Security, and Technology Law, which includes periodic review of the requirements for each degree and making annual adjustments as needed; providing guidance to students to assure they meet the necessary requirements for the degree they are seeking; and working with the Dean of Students and the Records office to confirm students have met the requirements for graduation.
• Establish two new graduate level programs in privacy and technology law: (i) an LLM in Privacy and Technology Law, and (ii) a Masters of Studies in Law in Privacy and Technology Law.
• Supervise students’ independent legal writing projects. Consult on student journal notes and seminar papers. Assist students seeking publication of their work.
• Assist in identifying and or creating new internship opportunities for current students. Collaborate with the Field Placement Office to support students in obtaining internships while in law school. Maintain cordial connections with organizations providing internships.
• Assist students in gaining full time employment after law school. Collaborate with the Career Center to support students to gain summer jobs and full time employment after graduation. Maintain cordial connections with placement supervisors and potential full time employers.
• As appropriate, pair students with alumni in the privacy and technology field for informational meetings, mock interviews, or other mentoring.
• Potentially teach a course on Privacy and Technology Law each year.
Serve as the primary point of contact and administrator of the Privacy and Technology Law Program:
• Establish a Privacy and Technology Law Advisory Council (PTAC) (similar to the existing Intellectual Property Law Advisory Council (IPAC)) which provides guidance and financial support to the program. The Assistant Dean maintains relationships with the council members, calling upon them as needed for program support, coordinates annual or semi-annual meetings, and works with the Development Staff to recruit new members.
• Work with appointed alumni leaders and Alumni Relations Staff to organize, fund, and market events. Attend events and cultivate relationships with alumni to enhance the program – e.g., identifying potential alumni, employment opportunities, and donors.
• Coordinate alumni leaders as needed.
• Organize and market Privacy and Technology Law events to elevate GW’s academic reputation. These might include conferences, lectures, discussion groups (Collaborative Conversations series), webinars, etc.
• Together with the Associate Dean for Intellectual Property Law, administer the GW Center for Law and Technology (GWCLT).
• Coordinate management and execution of GWCLT under the oversight of the Dean and the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
• Work with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, other Program Directors, and the Academic Team as needed to facilitate a positive student experience and smooth operation of the Law School.
• Publicize the GWCLT program and the work of Privacy and Technology Law faculty and students by developing communication materials in conjunction with the Communications Office, provide input to Law School publications on program topics; oversee the program’s social media outreach; and assist in managing the GWCLT social media and web presence and marketing efforts.
• Help to build, maintain, and support new initiatives related to Privacy and Technology Law.
• Work with the Law School Dean’s office, Development Office, GWCLT faculty, and alumni to enhance fund-raising from individuals, foundations, or other sources of funding.
• Create opportunities to promote and showcase the scholarly work and achievements of the GWCLT faculty and students.
• Organize and support conferences, symposia, and other scholarly, professional, and public-facing projects and events. These may be initiated by the Assistant Dean, individual GWCLT faculty members, related centers, initiatives, and programs, or student groups focused on privacy and technology law.
• Support the GWCLT related student journals and law student associations.
• Develop a new recruitment plan and work with Graduate and International Programs to initially create an LLM and MSL in Privacy and Technology Law. Then work with the Graduate and International Programs Office to recruit students for these new degreed programs. Assist the JD and Graduate Admissions staff with recruiting students interested in privacy and technology law; and the Dean of Students Office and Office of Graduate and International Programs with orientation and advising of students interested in the Privacy and Technology Law Program.
Perform related administrative and program support work:
• Assist the Associate Dean for IP Law in managing GWCLT’s budget; prepare and analyze reports as needed; and perform similar administrative duties.
• Monitor and adjust the program’s policies and procedures as needed and collaborate with other program directors and staff in updating the Law School Bulletin.
• Work closely with the Development and Alumni Relations Office to maintain positive alumni relations and raise money to support the program.
• Attend bar, organizational, and public meetings to obtain exposure and recognition for the program and receive feedback on issues and matters that will help ensure success of the program.
• Cultivate and implement efforts designed to enhance non-J.D. tuition revenue sources, including CLE and Executive Education; new LL.M. and M.S.L. degrees; and other strategic revenue opportunities consistent with the short- and long-term financial plan of the Law School.
• Serve as liaison and principal contact for students, prospective students, visiting scholars, and other visitors regarding the program.
Perform additional related duties as assigned by the Dean or the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in consultation with the faculty of the GWCLT Program. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the Dean or the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
