We’re currently searching for a Staff Counselor/Staff Psychologist to join our counseling center team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. The Cook Counseling Center provides mental health services to the student community of Virginia Tech. The Staff Psychologist/ Staff Counselor works with a multidisciplinary staff of counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurse practitioners, psychology interns, psychiatry residents, and practicum students to deliver services that maintain the highest standards of professional and ethical care. The center is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS) and has a doctoral internship program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS ROLE:
1) You’ll be joining the Thomas E. Cook Counseling team; a department committed to a spirit of excellence in providing timely and relevant university mental health services.
2) You’ll be reporting to the Director in a Regular twelve-month, 100% administrative professional appointment.
3) You'll provide brief, culturally competent counseling for individuals, groups, and couples with diverse clinical concerns while maintaining full and accurate case notes.
4) You'll work with partners across the university to develop and provide culturally informed outreach and prevention services as well as partner with others on staff to provide training for other staff members.
5) You’ll be responsible for providing back up coverage for our after-hours crisis service as assigned, and providing risk assessments and crisis management services during the day, as needed.
6) You’ll have the chance to grow and take advantage of a developmental plan with opportunities to advance within the Department and the Division.
7) You’ll be offered a base compensation package between $65,000-$80,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package which includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and so much more!

Required Qualifications
• Master’s degree in counseling or social work or a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology and be licensed or licensed eligible as a licensed professional counselor, licensed clinical social worker or licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Supervision may be provided with a goal of licensure within 1-2 years from start date of employment, depending on degree and licensure requirements.
• Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions with a multidisciplinary team
• Training and experience in delivering culturally competent interventions
• Experience with managing crisis situations, completing risk assessments, and disposition planning to address safety risks
• Well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills
• A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice
• The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy relationships
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues with acceptance, respect, and trust
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience and interest in working with college-student/young adult population
• Experience or interest in working with students from under-represented populations
• Strong commitment to social justice and issues of diversity
• Previous training and/or experience in a college mental health setting
• Interest and/or experience collaborating with other departments or offices on multidisciplinary teams
