Job Details

The Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering at LMU invites applicants to apply for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.  With a long history of excellence in electrical engineering education, the department has recently expanded to include degree programs in computer engineering (BSE and MSE). We seek to hire an innovative teacher-scholar to bolster these new degree programs.

In line with the university mission, our faculty are teacher-scholars working to advance the university beyond instruction by integrating science, technology, engineering, and math with Ignatian pedagogy to create deep student learning. Small class sizes foster an inclusive environment and create a space for innovative teaching practices. An integrated two-year design sequence and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment make possible meaningful hands-on learning experiences for our students. Targeted funding creates unique opportunities for faculty to mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research. We seek the next generation of mission-driven teacher-scholars to join our faculty.

Position Requirements:

  • Academic Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in computer engineering or a closely related field, conferred no later than the position start date of August 15, 2025.
  • Teaching Commitment: Demonstrated commitment to teaching a diverse student body in a transformative learning environment across a range of undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Research Development: Development of a thriving research program that involves mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and securing external funding.
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Commitment to actively challenging themselves, their students, and their colleagues to be anti-racist and work toward greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the profession.
  • Service Participation: Active participation in service activities at the academic, professional, and/or community levels.

Preferred Areas of Expertise:

  • Robotics: Including but not limited to autonomous systems, robotic control, and human-robot interaction.
  • Embedded Systems: Design and development of hardware-software systems, IoT applications, and real-time computing.
  • Applied Artificial Intelligence: Machine learning, data analytics, and AI-driven system design and implementation.

Opportunities and Support:

  • Research Funding: Internal funding is available to support faculty research initiatives, providing opportunities to pursue innovative projects and collaborations.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within the college and across the university, leveraging LMU's broad academic community.
  • Professional Development: LMU is committed to the ongoing professional development of its faculty, offering workshops, seminars, and funding for conference participation.

Application Instructions:

The following application materials must be submitted online by November 15, 2024, for full consideration:

Cover Letter: Summarizing your qualifications for the position, including your teaching and research interests, and your commitment to diversity and inclusion. Curriculum Vitae: Detailing your educational background, research accomplishments, work experience, and any leadership and service experience relevant to this position. Teaching Philosophy Statement: Addressing past and/or potential contributions related to LMU’s Mission, the practice of Ignation Pedagogy, and your overall vision for your role as a teacher-scholar. Research Statement: Outlining your research interests, current work, and future research plans, including how you plan to involve and mentor students. Diversity Statement: Describing how you have contributed to or plan to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in your teaching, research, and service. References: Contact information for at least three professional references who can speak to your qualifications for this position.

Additional Information:

  • Appointment Period: The appointment follows a 9-month faculty contract period from August 15 to May 15 of each academic year.
