The School of Education & Leadership at Hamline University invites applications for a full-time professorship in social studies education (assistant, associate, or professor of practice; rank and tenure access negotiable, based on qualifications).  We seek a colleague to work with us on a variety of contemporary issues in education, including understanding and challenging the ways in which systems of privilege and oppression operate in our public schools and in teacher education programs. We are especially interested in candidates who explicitly take a critical and responsive stance toward improving the schooling experiences and life outcomes of traditionally underserved and marginalized youth.

JOB SUMMARY

This faculty member will support Hamline’s School of Education and Leadership (HSEL) in its journey of developing culturally responsive/sustaining teachers who are able to embody the school’s core values:

  • Promote equity, justice, and antiracism in schools and society
  • Build and sustain supportive and inclusive communities of teachers and learners
  • Co-construct knowledge through learner-centered classrooms and practices
  • Practice thoughtful inquiry and critical reflection

Reporting to the Chair of HSEL and the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, this individual will play an integral role in the vibrant and collaborative HSEL faculty and staff community at Hamline. The successful candidate will teach courses in social studies education and foundational education, advise both graduate and undergraduate students, contribute to state and national accreditation processes, maintain a research and publication agenda commensurate with the position, and contribute to the shared governance of the unit. The position collaborates extensively with faculty and staff throughout the School of Education & Leadership, particularly in the initial license (Master of Arts in Teaching) program.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Knowledgeable about and experienced in secondary (6-12) social studies education and foundations of education;
  • Adept in the use of instructional technology;
  • Successful at creating culturally responsive classrooms and schools, using inclusive practices, and planning, implementing and assessing instruction for diverse learners;
  • Familiar with Minnesota’s teacher preparation standards and K-12 learning standards.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach 24 credits (6 semester-long courses) a year within the School of Education & Leadership (primarily in the Initial Licensure programs) and across the university as needed (e.g., First Year Seminar);
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students as needed;
  • Support school partnerships and clinical placements as needed;
  • Collaborate with HSEL faculty on continuous review and improvement of program curriculum;
  • Serve on HSEL, college-wide, and/or university-wide committees as needed;
  • Attend all unit meetings and trainings;
  • Maintain a research and publication agenda commensurate with the expectations of the appointment (assistant professor, associate professor, or professor of practice);
  • Maintain a service load commensurate with the expectations of the appointment
  • Complete the annual professional reflection and goal-setting process;
  • Support accreditation work through programmatic data collection, use of shared platforms (such as Workday, Canvas, Google Suite, etc.), convening of advisory panels, and review of programmatic data for continuous improvement;
  • Support admissions and recruitment work by attending information sessions and other activities to represent Hamline and its programs to prospective students.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Acquired terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in education, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field (for which candidate must have at least 18 graduate credit hours in Education) from an accredited institution of higher education (or the foreign equivalent) or an advanced degree in education with at least ten years of experience teaching in culturally and linguistically diverse settings;
  • Experience teaching a wide range of students in culturally and linguistically diverse settings for a minimum of three years (while holding a state license in secondary (6-12) social studies education);
  • Evidence of a commitment to equity and social justice for all children and youth;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • Experience teaching online, in person, and in hybrid format;
  • A scholarly record and agenda that demonstrates clear potential to succeed in a tenure-track line.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of teaching experience in secondary (6-12) social studies classrooms;
  • Successful teaching at the university level (in online and in-person contexts);
  • An established record of research and scholarship;
  • Funded research and potential to participate in grant writing and management.
