Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a Research Scientist to work with the Paleoclimatology team at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). The successful applicant will conduct use-inspired research in paleoclimatology or paleoenvironmental science and will provide expert guidance for the operational and development activities of the World Data Service for Paleoclimatology (WDS-Paleo). The WDS-Paleo is the world’s primary long-term repository for paleoclimate data, archiving data from numerous sources and making them publicly available for understanding and modeling environmental variability on time-scales beyond what is possible from the instrumental record. In addition to managing the WDS-Paleo, the NCEI Paleoclimatology team develops authoritative, scientific products to enhance decision-making, research, and discovery, and partners with national and international science initiatives to expand the use of paleoclimatic data.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Conduct use-inspired and self-directed research in paleoclimatology or paleoenvironmental science, with an emphasis on one or more of the following NOAA or NCEI priorities: climate extremes, climate indicators, climate modeling, data assimilation, fire, hydroclimate, or quantitative climate reconstructions.
  • Communicate scientific results via peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for operational data ingest and development of improved data access capabilities for the WDS-Paleo.
  • Develop and apply metadata and data standards that advance data stewardship for the WDS-Paleo.
  • Interact with user groups of the WDS-Paleo, including researchers, other government agencies, resource managers, and the general public.
  • Increase the visibility and use of paleo data across NOAA and to a wider audience outside the field, ranging from climate scientists to resource managers and decision-makers.
  • Contribute to project management and strategic planning for the Paleoclimatology Team.
  • Serve as the CIRES lead for the Paleoclimatology Team, including reporting and budgeting responsibilities for NOAA Cooperative Agreement funding.
What You Should Know
  • This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305.
  • If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.

What We Can Offer
  • CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • The annual hiring salary range for this position is $65,000 to $90,000.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require
  • Ph.D. in paleoclimatology or a related field is required, such as geosciences, atmospheric science, oceanography, geography, or environmental sciences.
What You Will Need
  • Ability to work well in a team and to build strong interpersonal relationships that facilitate cross-team knowledge sharing.
  • Commitment to doing service-based scientific research and informatics development work.
  • Experience organizing, documenting, integrating, and analyzing paleoclimatic or paleoenvironmental data.
  • Strong communication skills, demonstrated through peer-reviewed articles and oral presentations.
  • General understanding of multiple paleoclimate proxies and reconstruction techniques.
  • Interest in communicating research results to non-specialist or non-scientific audiences.
  • Experience with programming, such as in R, Python, MATLAB, or SQL.

  • Experience generating paleoclimatic or paleoenvironmental data.
  • General understanding of relational databases.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards and formats such as DIF, ISO, and SKOS.
  • Experience supervising or working with students and professional research staff.
  • Experience writing proposals, managing grants, and fulfilling requirements of funding agencies.
  • Ability to contribute to a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Post-doctoral experience is preferred, but not required.
