- This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
Job Description
This research position focuses on the science of bacterial evolution. It will consist of researching theoretical principles, but could include translational applications. Phylogenomic and bioinformatic analysis of bacterial populations in nature or in laboratory experiments will be a key component of the work. Prior experience is an asset though training will be possible at PMI. Likewise, laboratory microbiological, molecular, and biochemical skills are an asset though not essential. Communication and critical thinking skills are essential for performing the work and for communicating to the local and international scientific communities. Participating in team or independent grant writing to obtain research funding will be required. Student mentoring is a part of the NAU mission and is partial expectations.
Writing Scientific Manuscripts and Grants - 30%
- The scholar is expected to participate with collaborators to generate scientific papers and for the submission of research proposals.
Speaking to Scientific or Lay Audiences - 10%
- Research progress and basic scientific information will be communicated to different audiences through speech at conferences or invited lectures.
Laboratory and/or Computational Research - 50%
- Depending upon the project, laboratory and/or computational research involving bacterial genomic and phenotypic analysis will be conducted.
Mentoring Students - 10%
- Undergraduate and graduate students will be mentored in the laboratory, in computational analysis, or in their communication skills.
Other - 5%
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in relevant field.
Preferred Qualifications
- A PhD in microbiology or related field with an emphasis on bacterial evolution is desirable.
- The employee is expected to understand bacterial evolution and genomics, and to have expertise in one or more of the following categories: phylogenetics, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, bioinformatics.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the use of laboratory/field instruments and tools.
- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject disciplines
Skills
- Skills in one or more of microbiology, bioinformatics, protein biochemistry, immunology, epidemiolopgy, etc. are desirable.
- Experience in writing scientific papers is mandatory, while grant writing experience is desirable.
- Organizational and project management skills.
- Leadership, coordination, and/or supervision skills.
- Data collection, processing and analysis.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Background Information
This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary
Anticipated salary range is $54,779 to $68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
Benefits
Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents' Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service. NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
