About the Department/College

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Northern Arizona University is housed within the College of Health and Human Services, which offers statewide undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of allied health professions. The CSD department currently employs18 full-time faculty who provide classroom and clinical education to approximately 200 graduate students, 400 undergraduates enrolled in classes at the Flagstaff Mountain Campus and online, and additional students enrolled in undergraduate certificate programs, including an online SLP Assistant certificate. The Summer Track of the Master's degree in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology is a unique program that offers a pathway for students currently working in the field as Speech Language Pathologist Assistants (SLPAs) to pursue the MS degree primarily during summer months, while maintaining employment during the academic year. In an effort to place highly qualified SLPs who are prepared to work effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse populations in medically and educationally underserved areas, the Summer Track graduate program has expanded to include the NAU Yuma campus as well as the Flagstaff Mountain campus.

About the Position

In our endeavor to train and place highly qualified SLPs in educationally and medically underserved areas, this position will be based at the NAU Yuma Campus. Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Northern Arizona University invites applicants to apply for a 12-month Assistant Clinical Professor position (not tenure eligible). The Assistant Clinical Professor will provide evidence-based graduate student clinical supervision and mentorship in school-based and other clinical settings with an emphasis on culturally and linguistically responsive services, including assessment and treatment of bilingual and multilingual clients/students. Clinical education will include in-person and telepractice services for our Summer Track graduate program located at the NAU-Yuma campus. Responsibilities include clinical education and consultation with graduate students during Practicum, with an emphasis on providing services for students/clients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, academic teaching at the Yuma campus and online, service activities associated with our academic programs, and the possibility for engaging in related scholarship. Advanced spoken and written Spanish language ability in the context of professional practice in Speech-Language Pathology are required for this position.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Provide in-person and remote clinical education and consultation for graduate students, with an emphasis on the development of knowledge and skills leading to effective provision of culturally and linguistically responsive services for bilingual clients/students and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with other clinical educators to coordinate clinical practicum and externship placement sites for graduate students.
  • Engage in classroom teaching.
  • Engage and collaborate in scholarship and service activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is a hybrid position which allows the incumbent to complete their work at both an NAU site, campus, or facility and at a non-centralized site with or without accommodation.

12-month Assistant Clinical Professor position (non tenure track), based on the NAU Yuma Campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association.
  • Eligibility for licensure to practice Speech-Language Pathology in the state of Arizona.
  • Three years of clinical experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
  • Previous experience with clinical education.
  • Experience with provision of clinical services for bilingual populations and individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English and the ability to communicate professionally in spoken and written forms of both languages.
  • Experience with pediatric populations.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of HIPAA, FERPA, and IDEA requirements and other state and federal regulations.
  • Familiarity with ASHA and CFCC supervision guidelines.
  • Ability to provide clinical education in multiple areas of clinical Speech-Language Pathology practice.
  • Clinical experience in the medical setting.
  • Experience providing school-based Speech-Language Pathology services.
  • University teaching experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills related to best practices in the evaluation and treatment of culturally and linguistically diverse populations. (e.g., advanced coursework, continuing education).
  • Evidence of previous professional or scholarly presentations or publications on the topic of provision of culturally and linguistically responsive services in Speech-Language Pathology.


Driving Requirement

Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. Compensation & Benefits

Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
