Southeastern Louisiana University seeks a visionary, transformative, and strategic leader to serve as the next Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Southeastern Louisiana University. Overseeing the largest college at Southeastern, with a diverse array of programs, the dean will establish a bold vision, set achievable goals, and lead the college to a greater prominence regionally and nationally. With approximately 168 full-time faculty members and seven academic departments, the college offers baccalaureate degree programs in Art, Communication, Criminal Justice, English, General Studies, History, Music, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Theatre, and World Languages, as well as Master’s programs in Applied Sociology, English, History, Music, Psychology, and Strategic Communication to approximately 2,655 undergraduate and graduate majors.
The dean serves as the chief academic officer of the college and reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The dean is responsible to both the Provost and the President for providing leadership and direction for the college and its diverse group of students, faculty and staff. Responsibilities include supporting an environment that encourages diversity and inclusion, excellence in teaching and scholarship, program development, and active collaboration within the college, across the university, and with the community at large. Reporting administratively to the dean are the assistant dean; department heads of Communication and Media Studies, English and World Languages, History and Political Science, Music and Performing Arts, Psychology, Sociology and Criminal Justice, and Visual Art + Design; and directors of the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts; the General Studies program; and the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies.
The appointment is a 12-month position. The beginning date is negotiable, with January 2025 preferred. Salary is commensurate with experience. Consideration is assured for applications received by September 25, 2024. The search will continue until the position is filled.
Southeastern Louisiana University is a progressive regional, comprehensive university that enrolls approximately 13,500 graduate and undergraduate students. The University’s home, Hammond, is at the crossroads of Interstates 55 and 12 in the heart of Louisiana’s thriving Northshore, the fastest growing region in the state. It is centrally located within an hour’s drive of New Orleans, Baton Rouge (the state capital), and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and affords extensive cultural, recreational, and research opportunities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university in a discipline (or closely related area) offered by the college
Successful administrative experience in a college incorporating the arts, humanities, and/or social sciences at the department head, assistant dean, dean, or other comparable administrative experience appropriate for the college
Record of teaching, scholarship and service sufficient for appointment as full or associate professor at Southeastern in a discipline (or closely related area) offered by the college
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Record of teaching, scholarship and service sufficient for appointment as full professor at Southeastern in a discipline (or closely related area) offered by the college
Familiarity with the contributions and needs of the various disciplines within the college
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of relevant accreditation, curriculum, and program development processes applicable to the various disciplines within the college
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with department heads, faculty, staff, and other deans and administrators at all levels within the college and University
Committed to recruiting diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and students
