Salary and benefits are competitive, and the compensation package includes potential eligibility for SCU’s housing assistance program . The salary range for this position is $85,947 to $95,410 depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college-level.

Purpose:

As one of the nation’s premier master’s programs preparing licensed therapists, the Counseling Psychology Department trains therapists (MFT and LPCC) to be skilled in transformative therapeutic perspectives and methods to improve lives. Our school is dedicated to “A world in which everyone receives the education and the psychological tools and support needed to live flourishing lives of meaning, purpose, and connection.” The Counseling Psychology Department supports this mission through our work in preparing highly-trained, culturally-informed, and compassionate therapists and related professionals who strive to advance equity, justice, and inclusion within their communities. The successful candidate will actively strive toward multicultural fluency, cultural humility, and respect for diversity in clinical applications. We are especially interested in candidates whose experience includes clinical work with BIPOC and underserved communities.

We are a highly collegial department that embraces theoretical pluralism and integrative approaches to clinical work. The program focuses on theory and practice, and on the personal development of the therapist. Our students and graduates work in schools, hospitals, clinics and other settings with individuals and families. We share a common belief in integrative clinical approaches. Extant theoretical perspectives include Emotion-Focused, Existential-Humanistic, Cognitive-Behavioral, Psychodynamic, and Family Systems approaches. Our program also offers five optional areas of emphasis: Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Alternative and Correctional Psychology, Health Psychology, Latinx Counseling, and LGBTQ+ Counseling. Our program and faculty are growing, with six recent tenure-track faculty hires at the Assistant, Associate, and Professor level. Successful candidates will join a thriving department that values being in community with each other.

We are looking to hire an Assistant Professor in Health Psychology. Responsibilities include maintaining a program of research leading to publication of high-quality scholarship; teaching the standard academic-year 2-course per quarter course load for tenured and tenure-track positions; advising students, and providing service to the Department, School, and University.

Our Health Emphasis is our largest emphasis area, with tremendous student interest. We seek to expand our faculty in this area and seek a candidate whose area of scholarship fits within the general area of Health Psychology and is qualified to teach graduate courses from among the following: Positive Psychology & Health; Health Psychology: Theory & Practice; Stress & Stress Management; Biological Bases of Behavior; Clinical Assessment; Psychopharmacology; as well as other courses related to their expertise.

The successful candidate should have:

An earned doctorate in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Community Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, or equivalent, or will have completed the requirements of the doctorate at the time of appointment.

A successful history of and plan for future published research.

A strong commitment and evidence of being equipped to teach graduate classes and to prepare therapists to work with the racially, ethnically, linguistically, and economic diversity of CA and the US.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
  • Licensed or license eligible as a Psychologist, LMFT, LPCC or LCSW
  • Successful prior experience teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Research areas that are clinically relevant to Health Psychology or Community Mental Health.
  • Experience working with BIPOC and marginalized communities .
  • Demonstrated ability to advise graduate students and contribute to overall program development.

  • Three samples of recent written work. Published scholarly work is preferred, but recent work showcasing the applicants’ research direction is also encouraged.
  • A statement outlining your commitment to and experience with issues of anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and/or clinical work.
  • Recent teaching evaluations, if available.
  • Names and contact information for four references. References will be contacted at the finalist stage.
Responsibilities for this position include:

Teaching: Specific teaching assignments will draw upon the candidate’s expertise and the needs of the Department. The standard teaching load for tenure-line faculty is two courses per quarter, and faculty typically teach a mix of foundation and core courses as well as those in their area of specialization. In addition, there is an option for faculty to teach an advanced elective of their own preference and design . Student mentoring and advising is an important and required activity in the Department.

Research: Research and scholarship is a core part of tenure line faculty responsibilities. Faculty are expected to have a strong and active research agenda and a sustained record of publication throughout their career.

Service: All faculty regularly engage in departmental, school, and university service and leadership commensurate with their position.
