Eye Bank Lab Technician

Job Summary

The Utah Lions Eye Bank, located in Murray, Ut, is a nonprofit organization and has facilitated the gift of sight worldwide through transplantation and research since 1972. By restoring vision, cornea donation changes not only the lives of recipients, but also the lives of everyone around them. The Eye Bank Lab Technician participates in upholding core lab functions of the Utah Lions Eye Bank including laboratory maintenance, tissue evaluation and tissue distribution. The Eye Bank Lab Technician is required to be trained and capable of performing front line essential duties such as coordinator of potential donors and recovery of donor tissue and is responsible to perform those tasks as needed.



Responsibilities
  • Performing slit lamp biomicroscopy and specular microscope evaluation on tissue.
  • Reviewing all tissue requests submitted into the ULEB database for accuracy and completeness; process daily by assessing appropriateness of match between donor and recipient.
  • Evaluating, assessing, and prioritizing all tissue requests with available tissue and allocate appropriate tissue with request.
  • Coordinating and communicating all distribution and allocation requests with the Laboratory Supervisor to assure accuracy of tissue distribution along with packaging and shipping.
  • Preparing tissue information package for surgeons and assure that package accompanies all tissue distributed by the ULEB.
  • Assisting in tissue processing by circulating and performing ancillary processing activities
  • Performing daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly cleaning.
  • Possessing the ability to take tissue allocation on call as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Preferences
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Experience as CNA, ophthalmic technician, OR technician preferred.
  • Education background in life sciences preferred
