St. Lawrence University seeks an Assistant Director of Advising, Retention, and Student Success. This full-time, 11-month position (August to June); reports to the Executive Director of Advising, Retention and Student Success.

General advising and student success work

  • Work as member of advising team to provide outreach and support to students in academic distress, provide academic recovery support for students on academic notice
  • Share in work of providing academic advising assistance
  • Assist with walk-in advising and related support programs, particularly during periods of registration, early semester progress surveys, and midterm warning grades, and respond to student inquiries throughout the year.
  • Serve as a general academic advisor for undeclared first-year students and sophomores as needed, assisting students with academic major/minor exploration and declaration processes.
  • Work with advising team colleagues to monitor and address Starfish flags for students.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly Advising Team (A-Team) meetings.
  • Communicate with instructors and other staff members as needed to support student success
  • Provide or assist with workshops and information sessions for various groups on campus (e.g. FYP classes, international students, transfer students, and faculty).
  • Serve as a tenant admin (along with the Executive Director) on the Starfish student success platform, assist campus users with tech support and training as needed.
  • Assist with any office-wide programs or initiatives and other duties as assigned related to advising and student success.

Coordination of Peer Tutoring Program

  • Hire and train peer tutors for a diverse array of courses, especially those with heavy tutoring demand, and guide individual tutors in their self-assessment and professional development
  • Mentor peer tutors in dealing with challenges that come up in tutoring sessions, offer ongoing feedback for tutor development in response to tutor session reports
  • Undertake regular assessment of the tutoring program, revising tutor hiring and training and other aspects of the program in response to assessment results
  • Coordinate student connections with complementary peer academic supports around campus (e.g., TA programs, WORD Studio, Language Resource Center, and the PQRC)

Salary Range $55,400 - $57,000 annually.

Minimum Qualifications          

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience especially in higher education)
  • Three years of work experience in higher education preferred (three years of work in high school or related educational experience will be considered; experience coaching and/or providing academic advising to students; experience supervising undergraduate tutors, teaching assistants, or graduate students/assistants a plus; one-on-one experience with students, preferably within the contexts of academic support and/or communication skills development; experience or willingness to work with students/staff in Opportunity Programs; experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and with varied academic needs, including students with disabilities).
  • Confidentiality and professional behavior is essential and willingness to contribute as needed to a high-functioning team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be patient, empathize, and promote calm responses to students, faculty, staff and students in stressful academic situations.
  • Demonstrated ability with Microsoft 365 (including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams), Outlook Email and Calendar.
  • Willingness to learn additional software and cloud-based systems to assist with advising, retention, and student success (e.g. Colleague Self-Service, Slate, Starfish).
