The School of Graduate Studies ( https://graduate.umaryland.edu /) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is seeking applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track, Assistant or Associate Professor and Program Director in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership . The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership (DEIL) program offers both a MS degree and a post-baccalaureate certificate (PBC) program. The program provides learners with the tools necessary to serve in leadership roles that marshal agency as well as organizational, and/or institutional efforts to create and maintain environments that go further than supporting the needs of individuals of diverse identities, but center belongingness and the critical examination of policies and practices that disproportionately impact individuals and groups based on their group membership.
The Program Director is responsible for facilitating the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the School of Graduate Studies’ M.S. program. The Program Director collaborates with other Program Directors in the School of Graduate Studies to coordinate course offerings and program planning and improvement. In addition, the Program Director collaborates with others in student services, student recruitment, admissions, enrollment, and financial aid.
In addition to serving as Faculty and Program Director, the selected candidate will also serve as Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Student Success and Belonging in the Division of Student Affairs . In the AVP role, the selected faculty member will have an administrative appointment where they provide leadership, guidance, and strategic direction on the development of initiatives, programs, policies, procedures, and services that promote, encourage, and support student access, persistence, learning, and success. This position provides comprehensive leadership, strategic vision, and oversight of the Intercultural Center, the Student Pantry, and student success and engagement initiatives in the Division of Student Affairs. Responsible for equity, diversity, inclusion, and student engagement risk management and mitigation efforts on behalf of the Division of Student Affairs. The Assistant/Associate Professor and Assistant Vice President of Student Success and Belonging will collaborate with other diversity-focused leaders, individuals, and departments across the institution to advance curricular and co-curricular diversity, equity, inclusion, and student engagement initiatives that recognize the multiple identities of students, and develop, implement, and evaluate access and retention strategies with an emphasis on first-generation, low-income, and traditionally underserved populations.
Assistant/Associate Professor appointments are long-term, renewable contracts and are eligible for promotion. Rules governing such appointments are located in the Policy and Procedures for Faculty Appointment and Promotion for Graduate School .

Responsibilities
Graduate School Faculty and Program Director
- Provides strategic direction and leadership for the M.S. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership.
- Teaches and advises students in the M.S. DEIL program and the P.B.C. in Intercultural Leadership and monitors their programs of study and progression.
- Develops short- and long-range planning objectives for the academic degree program.
- Coordinates administrative processes involved in supporting the program, including recruitment, selection, admission, registration, orientation, and progression of students.
- Oversees the designing of curriculum and scheduling classes.
- Collaborates with the Graduate School’s instructional designers in the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL).
- Supports students’ needs, communicating with students daily; ensures high quality academic support for students.
- Develops strategies for student recruitment, review credentials, counsel students concerning program requirements.
- Undertakes monitoring and assessment of students’ course work, project work and examinations, and maintains up-to-date and accurate records of their progress and achievement; participates on established School of Graduate Studies committees.
- Serves as a liaison with appropriate committees to evaluate relevance of curriculum content and to communicate and evaluate teaching objectives.
- Provides guidance to faculty in the Program to ensure communication of their responsibility for administering student evaluations, completing, and submitting grades, rosters, etc.
- Addresses the needs of a highly diverse student population in age, ethnicity, cultural background, and other dimensions of diversity.
- Engages in scholarly activity in areas of interest. Scholarship is broadly interpreted and may include implementation and assessment of novel instructional methods.
- Designs capstone research projects with the Program Director and assisting students with their assigned research projects.
- Serves as an institutional expert, resource, and thought leader on contemporary and validated approaches to establishing a culture that values and advances student equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives, principles, practices, and policies.
- Responsible for planning and development of pathways for improving the student campus climate, which includes promoting initiatives, trainings, and resources designed to address racism and bias at an individual and systemic level.
- Provides strategic leadership and engages collaboratively with UMB Student Affairs staff, campus partners, and university and school EDI practitioners to advance UMB Student Affairs and University priorities related to ensuring that the appropriate infrastructure is in place to promote student success, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Leads strategic equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging operations and reporting on behalf of the Chief Student Affairs Officer/Vice President of Student Affairs.
- Serves on the UMB Student Affairs executive leadership team, implements the Student Affairs mission and vision, and provides consultation on strategic student equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging within the University.
- Provides leadership, strategic vision, general oversight, and support of Student Affairs leaders who oversee the Intercultural Center, Student Pantry, student and community engagement, student organization leadership development, and student programming. Oversees the recruitment, performance, and training of team members and continually reviews strengths and increases proficiencies of staff to maintain a well-trained, highly involved, and motivated team that is reflective of UMB’s students.
- Manages auxiliary and state budgets as well as other financial initiatives. Develop and cultivate external funding supports for the Intercultural Center and UMB Student Pantry operations and initiatives through grant writing and advancement of philanthropic endeavors.
- Responsible for risk management and risk mitigation efforts, including the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and trainings.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Faculty/Program Direction : Track record of successful teaching in synchronous and asynchronous online learning environments, discipline specific knowledge of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum design, evidence-based teaching methods for individuals and groups; commitment to diversity, and equitable and inclusive teaching practices; track record of successful research, scholarship, and advising in educational settings. Demonstrated experience serving as a leader and collaborator in advancing student advocacy, inclusion, and equity programming and initiatives within higher education.
Assistant Vice President : Demonstrated experience collaborating effectively with diverse students, faculty, and staff within a higher education setting; demonstrated knowledge and experience with theoretical frameworks designed to achieve strategic goals and objectives related to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. For example, conflict resolution, intergroup dialogue, and restorative justice; extensive experience developing, facilitating, and assessing professional development workshops, trainings, and programming designed to enhance the intercultural competency of students, faculty, and staff; knowledge of student development theory, issues, and trends; strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills that promote consensus building; excellent communication skills.
Minimum Education: Minimum of a doctoral level degree in a social/behavioral science, education, evaluation and assessment, sociology, public administration, or related field, plus substantial experience in an academic environment.
Minimum Experience: 2 years as academic faculty in a professional discipline, preference for those with >5 years of experience.
Preference for prior experience in a supervisory and management role.

Hiring Range: Commensurate with education and experience, the Assistant Professor range starts at $100,000; the Associate Professor range starts at $115,000.
