Job Description Summary: Miami University invites applications for the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, Research and Innovation within the College of Engineering and Computing. The Associate Dean of Graduate Programs, Research and Innovation within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) will serve as the college leader for graduate education and promote excellence to further Miami’s image and standing as a nationally recognized, student-centered public research university. The Associate Dean should also have a strong commitment to working tirelessly to advance the principles of inclusive excellence within the college.

Job Description: The Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, Research and Innovation will:

  • Develop a unique PhD program and support and grow existing graduate degree programs;
  • Develop and promote research capacity by leveraging the expertise of faculty in both academic departments and proactively pursuing funding opportunities across a broad range of relevant areas;
  • Advance the research mission and vision of CEC by learning and implementing best practices through attendance at the Associate Dean of Research forums nationally and making data informed decisions around leveraging faculty and staff expertise;
  • Create research mentorship programs for students and faculty as part of the student and faculty development process;
  • Build research infrastructure within the College and build partnerships both within the university and externally;
  • Work with faculty to utilize innovative, evidence-based pedagogical techniques to improve student learning and increase student retention;
  • Assist in identifying online courses in engineering and computing that have global reach and appeal, particularly in areas where there is high need and identify and work with faculty who can deliver the courses;
  • Work closely with faculty and students to engage in tech transfer through partnerships with other units on campus;
  • Chair the Inclusive Excellence Committee and think through innovative approaches to recruit and retain a diverse student body;
  • Work closely with the Budget and Planning analyst to identify Graduate Assistant (GA) positions, allocate them equitably to departments and approve nominations;
  • Serve as Chair of the College’s Graduate Council;
  • Serve as CEC’s liaison to the Office of Research and Innovation;
  • Approve Graduate courses for the college;
  • Approve Graduate Faculty nominations;
  • Approve in a timely manner sponsored project proposals through the Cayuse system;
  • Lead, facilitate, and support grant-writing activities and proposal submissions in the quest for intra- and extramural funding including funding for research training;
  • Serve as a resource for faculty seeking advice and support to develop strategic research initiatives in response to emerging opportunities;
  • Increase awareness of online and in-person training opportunities in research;
  • Facilitate reviews of grant proposals and manuscripts as requested by faculty members; and
  • Lead the quest to establish Centers of Excellence by fostering research creativity and innovation throughout the College.

Minimum Qualifications:

Miami seeks an exceptional leader with a strong record of academic accomplishment, collaboration, and a forward-looking vision to work closely with the Dean on strategic initiatives around graduate education, research, technology transfer and innovation. The Associate Dean shall possess significant leadership experience in undergraduate academic programs and a trajectory of increasing responsibility in administrative positions. The Associate Dean shall also have a PhD or other relevant terminal degree with the rank of full professor with tenure within an academic unit of the University.
