PS Poison Info Spec-Pharmacist
Job Summary
Specialists in poison information provide assessment, case management advice and follow-up care for poison emergency and instructional telephone calls received by the Utah Poison Control Center from the general public, public health and health care professionals. They also precept students and provide didactic lectures in the College of Pharmacy. Position is 100% onsite at the Utah Poison Control Center on the University of Utah Health Academics Campus with potential for partial remote work after becoming a certified specialist in poison information.
Responsibilities
Provides verbal and written clinical toxicology consultation in response to emergency and informational telephone calls and completes documentation in computerized medical record system. Investigates case history, researches medical literature and consults appropriate sources to provide informed and proper treatment and triage recommendations and develops protocols that are medically and economically appropriate. Precepts PharmD students, Pharmacy Practice residents and emergency medicine residents. Prepares and delivers lectures on poisoning topics to internal and external audiences. Participates in other outreach education activities and on-going clinical research projects. Prepares information for and attends in-service sessions and staff meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
This position requires licensure as a Pharmacist; current national certification as a Specialist in Poison Information or the ability to obtain the certification within 2 exam cycles; knowledge of human pathophysiology, clinical pharmacology and drug information; and demonstrated human relation, organization and effective communication skills. Poison Information Specialist certification requires passing an examination. Eligibility for the exam requires licensure as a Pharmacist or Registered Nurse, working 2000 hours in a Poison Information Center and fielding 2000 poison exposure calls. Certification must be renewed every seven years.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Preferences
This position requires licensure as a Pharmacist (or the ability to obtain Utah pharmacist licensure within 4 months of hire); the ability to obtain national Specialist in Poison Information certification within 2 exam cycles (or become ABAT diplomat); knowledge of human pathophysiology, clinical pharmacology and drug information; and demonstrated human relation, organization and effective communication skills.
