Assistant Director of Community Standards

Empire State University is currently seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Community Standards. The Assistant Director of Community Standards (State Title: Senior Staff Assistant) plays a vital role in upholding the university student conduct policy. This position is a resource to faculty, staff and students on student conduct and serves as the university hearing officer. In addition to supporting the Executive Director of University Services, the Assistant Director works with faculty & staff in responding to behavioral concerns, plans and implements training programs, develops behavioral action plans for students, and provides transparent information about student policies. The Assistant Director works closely with faculty and staff, providing resources and training as needed in de-escalation and response to incidences of policy violation.

The selected incumbent will manage the academic integrity hearing process. This includes scheduling, documentation, ensuring due process and all appropriate policies are upheld, and providing education about the process to the university community.

Other responsibilities include:
  • Investigate and adjudicate alleged violations of the student conduct policy.
  • Recruit, train, and manage members for student conduct and academic integrity hearings.
  • Ensure that all hearing members are trained on annual basis.
  • Develop and deliver training workshops and presentations on topics related to community standards, student conduct, and de-escalation.
  • Assist the Executive Director of University Services in seeking resolution to escalated student concerns.
  • Utilize university technology systems to find relevant information, document work and ensure consistent communication and processes. Maintain complete records of all student situations in relevant databases.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respectful communication when dealing with students and colleagues around sensitive issues.
  • Serve as point of contact for the University Services Office in the absence of the Executive Director for University Services .
  • Advise student lead Peer Mediation group.


Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in higher educations, student affairs, human resources, or related fields.
  • Minimum of three years relevant experience with student conduct, or academic integrity hearings.
  • Strong understanding of due process and fundamental fairness for students in higher education setting.
  • Ability to analyze, mediate, and resolve complex problems.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks.
  • Experience with assessment and reporting trends.
  • Evidence of relationship-building.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Evidence of ability to communicate, engage, and develop rapport with individuals of diverse cultural, social, linguistic, and religious backgrounds and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional experience working in student conduct office.
  • Experience with Ellucian's Banner, CRM systems or other data management and communication technology.
  • Experience working in online learning environment.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.
  • Prior knowledge of and experience in working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.

Special Information:
  • Occasional travel may be required to fulfill department, division, and university-wide commitments.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • SUNY Empire provides employees with remote and flexible work environment to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff in a dispersed work environment. University locations that may be considered include Saratoga Springs, Rochester and Selden, NY.


Additional Information:
Rank/Salary: SL3 / $55,500-$60,000, dependent on experience and qualifications.
