About the Opportunity:

The Data Science Institute (DSI) is a high-visibility campus hub that partners with multiple departments and other units at Brown to support interdisciplinary data science education and research throughout campus. The institute also houses two research centers, the Center for Computational Molecular Biology and the Center for Technological Responsibility, Reimagination and Redesign.

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director of Administration and Finance manages the financial, administrative, and human resources operations for DSI, ensuring that financial and administrative practices conform to University policies. The ADAF develops and implements internal procedures and protocols and plays a critical leadership role in support of budget management and analysis, supervises administrative staff, student affairs, grants/gifts/endowments administration, and performs other miscellaneous activities related to the management of the institute.

The ADAF works closely with the institute Director and the research center directors to facilitate short and long-range strategic planning and the allocation of financial and budgetary activities. The position supports the Director regarding the articulation of policies, protocols, and other communications to staff and faculty.

The position reports to the Director, and manages administrative staff in the areas of financial management, communications, administration, and academic program management.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree required or an equivalent combination of education and experience, graduate degree desirable.
  • 5+ years of experience in higher education administration or similar related experience, such as project management and strategic communications.
  • 2 years of previous supervisory experience is required, or a demonstrated aptitude for supervision.

Job Competencies
  • Strong staff management skills required, i.e. hiring, supervision, employee evaluation.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to assess priorities and pivot in response to pressing needs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent financial management skills.
  • Familiarity with Google and Microsoft platforms, as well as project management software; a strong aptitude for learning new systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
  • Familiarity with communications best practices
