The Associate Director for Mentoring & Diversity Initiatives with the Center for Career Excellence reports to the Director, and works with Career Excellence colleagues, University Advancement, and other key University partners to significantly expand and enhance the current LINC Career Mentoring Program as part of the Center’s strategy to provide students networking and skill-building opportunities to improve their career readiness. The Associate Director manages a robust program that links students with the Laurentian Network to build connections, develop competencies, explore careers and industries, hone professional etiquette, and learn how to articulate their St. Lawrence experience to employers and graduate programs. The Associate Director creates a comprehensive training program for students and mentors, designs a curriculum and supporting resources that are developmentally appropriate for students of each class year, provides group meetings for mentors and students, and strategically builds identity attributes into the LINC Career Mentoring Program. To ensure the Center is meeting the needs of all students, the Associate Director also collaborates with Career Excellence colleagues, the Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, Coordinator of Retention and Academic Support, and International Student Services to create programming for marginalized student populations including LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, First Generation, and International students. The Associate Director assists with the Career Classes as appropriate.
Program Management
- Build mentoring program module within Laurentian Connection/PeopleGrove platform.
- Design comprehensive training program for mentors and students for virtual and in-person delivery.
- Create dynamic, developmentally appropriate, mentoring curriculum with supporting materials for students and mentors; provide group check-in meetings to both cohorts.
- Work with Assistant Director of Marketing, Assessment & Technology to market program and application to students; design mentor newsletter.
- Manage matching process for students and mentors using Laurentian Connection/PeopleGrove platform; offer guidance and answer questions.
- Coordinate and manage Kick-Off event for mentors and students (on-campus and virtual); handle communications and logistics.
- Offer student informational meetings; meet with students to answer questions and discuss concerns regarding the program.
- Develop initiatives to add identity preferences into the mentor/mentee match process.
- Handle mentor and student issues and conflicts; provide assistance in resolving concerns.
- Work with Assistant Director of Marketing, Assessment & Technology on program evaluations and assessment.
- Assist Advancement colleagues in identifying and recruiting alumni and parent mentors.
Diversity Initiatives
- Develop initiatives to add identity preferences into the LINC Career Mentoring Program mentor/mentee match process; collaborate with Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion on strategies to meet the needs of our underrepresented students and engage alumni from these groups.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, Coordinator of Retention and Academic Support, and International Student Services on strategies to meet the needs of our underrepresented students and diverse populations; engage alumni from these groups for student programming.
- Work with Director on strategies to build diversity, inclusion and belonging into the Center’s overall mission, and determine ways to best meet the needs of our current students and reflect today’s St. Lawrence.
- Assist Director in reviewing and updating Center’s Diversity Strategic Plan annually.
Internal & External Relations
- Actively participate in Center’s evaluation, assessment, and reporting practices.
- Work directly with University Advancement, Laurentian Engagement, Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, Coordinator of Retention and Academic Support, International Student Services.
- In consultation with Advancement, engage alumni as mentor volunteers to assist students in the career exploration and preparation process.
- Assist with special events as needed. Such events may include Orientation, Admissions Visit Days, Board of Trustee Weekends, Alumni Executive Council Weekends, Family Weekend, Homecoming Weekend, Reunion Weekend.
- Attend Laurentian Events as requested.
Teaching
- Assist with the Career Classes as appropriate.
Other duties as assigned or requested to meet departmental goals and objectives.
Professional Development
- Actively seek out resources and information to stay up-to-date on industry best practices, career mentoring, diversity and inclusion, shifts in career development, and employer hiring trends.
- Participate in professional development meet-ups and webinars with our member associations; make use of online resources.
- Attend a yearly professional development conference as office budget allows.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts discipline, business, or related field with 5 years of experience required; Master’s degree in a related field with 3 years of experience preferred. One year as an undergraduate or graduate intern within a college/university office may substitute for one year of work experience.
- Experience working with constituents from diverse backgrounds is required.
- Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining relationships with a wide range of internal and external constituents including students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and employers.
- Ability to be innovative while providing developmentally appropriate individual and group programming.
- Strong collaboration/team, organizational, program development, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain the highest level of professionalism and provide exceptional customer service.
- Knowledge of mentoring, networking and informational interviewing, experiential learning, resume and cover letter writing, job/graduate school search strategies.
- Innovative thinking and analytical abilities, project management, and demonstrated competency to assess, organize, and prioritize multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Knowledge and understanding of best practices in collegiate career development, as well as workplace trends.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills necessary for communicating with small and large audiences.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel; comfort interacting via Zoom.
- Ability to travel and work non-standards hours, including some nights and weekends, is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion is strongly preferred.
- Experience using or familiarity with PeopleGrove platform preferred.
- Familiarity with platforms such as Handshake, Firsthand/Vault, LinkedIn, LinkedIn Learning, Qualtrics a plus.
