Job Description
The University of Missouri System’s governing body, the UM System Board of Curators seeks a strategic, communicative and facilitative leader to serve as the primary liaison between the Board, its Members, and the University administration. This newly reimagined role provides a tremendous opportunity for impact at scale, working closely with the university’s leadership and governing members as they help drive the strategy and longevity of the four-university system for the betterment of the State of Missouri, higher education, and many more.
Summary of Position
The Secretary of the Board of Curators (the “Secretary”) and Senior Director for Board Operations is a high-level leadership position and one of three offices hired directly by and reporting to the University of Missouri System Board of Curators (the “Board”). The position is the primary liaison between the Board (the University's governing body) and the University administration. One of four ‘Board Officers’, this position is responsible for working with the Board, the President, and the General Counsel of the University in particular, to promote effective Board governance and foster collaboration between the University administration and the Board members.
The successful candidate must exhibit strong communication (written and verbal), leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills necessary to assist Board members and University leadership in overseeing the four universities of the University of Missouri System. The successful candidate will also have a creative approach to problem-solving, employing new concepts and approaches, when necessary, be self-motivated, well organized, and able to manage details. The successful candidate must also use good judgment in stressful situations, have excellent interpersonal skills with a sense of tact and diplomacy, and have unquestioned personal and professional integrity. Taking steps to quickly develop a thorough knowledge of all aspects of the University System - its people, events, academic curriculum, culture, traditions, and values - will significantly benefit the successful candidate for the Secretary position.
The successful candidate will exhibit an ability to earn and keep the trust of the Board, President, Administration, Faculty, universities, and external constituents by fully committing to the University System's well-being and acting as an honest broker among the various constituencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitates constructive engagement between the Board, President, and other University System leaders to promote a culture of collaboration and trust-based working relations.
- Responsible for facilitating the understanding and implementation of the Board’s strategic oversight across the University System in conjunction with senior leaders.
- Delivers complete and timely information to the Board, ensuring the Board has the information necessary to carry out its responsibilities, participate in all Board meetings, and build relationships with Board members and University leadership to facilitate Board activities and responsibilities.
- Facilitates the design of Board processes and deliberations involved in long-range planning for Board meetings in alignment with the Board’s strategic priorities and logistics.
- Drives measurement of the Board’s progress against stated short, medium, and long-term strategies, including follow-up on action items from the Board, small group, and one-on-one meetings
- Oversees Board meeting-specific logistics, including supervising the scheduling of Board meetings, meeting agenda preparation, timely delivery of meeting materials, capturing and maintaining minutes and Board correspondence, and archiving all Board materials.
- Oversees the coordination of material provided to the Board for deliberations, actions, and information items, including reviewing content for completeness, accuracy, and effectiveness.
- Responsible for overseeing Curators’ onboarding, training, and development opportunities.
- Oversees information technology resources required by the Board to support their deliberative activities.
- Responsible for engaging with and liaising with third-party service providers.
- Leads, recruits, develops and evaluates Board-related administrative support staff and their performance in their duties, including developing board materials and coordinating the curators’ involvement in university events, travel logistics, calendar management, and other activities.

Minimum Qualifications
A Master's degree in a relevant area and 8 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired OR a Bachelor's degree in a relevant area and 10 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Additionally, candidates will be further evaluated on:
• Significant board relations experience
• Exceptional communication capabilities
• Strategic thinking and project management acumen
• Capability to engage and manage complex relationships with varied stakeholder groups
• Fluency in higher education governance and/or non-profit management/operations of large, complex organizations
• Deep understanding of the policy and legal implications of governing boards
Anticipated Hiring Range
It is anticipated that candidates can expect an annual salary between $125,000 - $200,000 based on relevant experience and education.

The University of Missouri, which refers to the institution, in all of its parts, persons, property and relationships wherever situated, owned, operated, controlled, managed or otherwise regulated, is under the supervision or direction of The Board of Curators of the University of Missouri.
The Board of Curators, the governing body of the University of Missouri, consists of nine members, who are appointed by the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate; provided, that at least one but no more than two shall be appointed from each congressional district, and no person shall be appointed a curator who shall not be a citizen of the United States, and who shall not have been a resident of the state of Missouri two years prior to their appointment. Not more than five curators shall belong to any one political party.
