Position Summary
The Dean of Social Sciences provides strategic instructional leadership that supports the goals and strategic plan of the Division and Bellevue College. The Dean is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating Social Sciences programs to address the educational needs of students and the community, while promoting student achievement through exceptional teaching, ensuring accessible programs, and cultivating transformative learning. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean plays a crucial role in the College's instructional team, responsible for implementing a shared vision and direction for academic and professional programs and instructional delivery.
The Dean directly supervises Division Faculty, Program Chairs, Program Directors, Director of Operations, and the Assistant Dean, and indirectly supervises other employees within the division. The Dean has full authority to develop and implement division protocols and best practices, serve on governance councils and advisory boards, and manage the division's financial and budgetary resources. The Dean ensures that all aspects of divisional instructional delivery are driven by the values of equity, inclusivity, teaching and learning excellence, community engagement, and student success. The Dean embodies the College's commitment to being a student-centered institution, advocating for social justice, demonstrating service leadership, fostering community, and upholding integrity.
Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule
Position Salary Range: $114,399/year - $171,599/year
The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Typically, new hire starts no higher than $128,699/year based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.
We offer comprehensive compensation package with salary and benefits as the main components. Generous benefits package is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid holidays, sick, and vacation plans; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc.
The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which means that you are not eligible for overtime pay.

About the Department
The Social Sciences occupy a position between the Natural Sciences and the Humanities, with considerable overlap in both fields. Indeed, some of Bellevue College's Social Science courses earn credit in the Natural Sciences, while others receive credit in the Humanities. This position notwithstanding, the Social Sciences also stand uniquely alone, having given rise to some of the most important intellectual work of the modern world. This work has deepened our knowledge of humanity and laid bare the complexity and richness of the human condition. It has as well gifted humanity with a multiplicity of disciplines. Among these are Anthropology, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Cultural and Ethnic Studies, Economics, Geography, History, International Studies, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.
Essential Functions
Strategic Leadership and Vision
- Develops and leads the vision and goals for the division in alignment with the College's strategic plan.
- Represents the division in college-wide strategic planning and decision-making processes.
- Promotes a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the division.
- Engages in long-term planning and assessment to ensure the division's growth and relevance.
Academic and Curriculum Oversight
- Oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of academic programs.
- Ensures curriculum currency, relevance, and alignment with industry standards and transfer institutions.
- Collaborates with faculty to promote excellence in teaching and learning.
- Supports curriculum development for new and existing programs, including bachelor's programs.
Faculty and Staff Management
- Recruits, hires, mentors, and evaluates faculty and staff within the division.
- Oversees the tenure and promotion process, including conducting observations and providing feedback.
- Supports professional development and growth opportunities for faculty and staff.
- Promotes a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
Student Success and Support
- Develops and implements strategies to enhance student retention, graduation rates, and overall success.
- Collaborates with student support services to provide a holistic approach to student development.
- Promotes equity and inclusion in all aspects of student support and programming.
- Addresses student grievances and works to resolve academic issues.
Resource Management and Budgeting
- Manages the division's budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources to meet strategic goals.
- Advocates for necessary resources to support the division's programs and initiatives.
- Oversees the allocation and maintenance of facilities and equipment within the division.
- Monitors strategic enrollment management to achieve maximum efficiency in revenue generation.
Community and External Relations
- Builds and maintains relationships with community partners, industry leaders, and other stakeholders.
- Represents the division and the College in external events, advisory boards, and partnerships.
- Engages in fundraising and development activities to support division initiatives.
- Recruits community partners for experiential learning resources, program advisory committees, and student mentoring programs.
Governance and Compliance
- Serves on college governance committees and task forces, representing the division's interests.
- Ensures compliance with accreditation standards, state and federal regulations, and college policies.
- Leads initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the division and college-wide.
- Actively contributes to college-wide initiatives, internal partnerships, and collaborations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree from an accredited institution or any combination of relevant experience can be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
- Minimum two (2) years' full-time (or equivalent) teaching experience.
- Minimum three (3) years' experience with managing complex and diverse organizational units with competing needs.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse colleagues and students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
- Proven track record of effective and productive management, interpersonal, communication, collaboration, evaluative and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to engage all team members collaboratively, and work collectively to implement and achieve goals and objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to address disproportionate impact and equity issues in the higher education environment.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, develop, and evaluate diverse faculty and staff, and in leading and bringing together people of diverse backgrounds in an inclusive manner.
- Experience with budgetary processes and financial statements.
- Experience in instructional design and/or curriculum development.
- Demonstrated ability to assess trends in education, technology, business and industry, including policies at the state, regional, national, and global level.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree or equivalent experience in a Social Sciences discipline.
- Doctorate in a related field.
- Teaching experience in higher education.
- Record of active contribution to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, whether through teaching, professional service, or community engagement.
- More than two (2) years of full-time (or equivalent) teaching experience in higher education.
- Record of active contribution to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, whether through teaching, professional service, or community engagement.
- Experience with strategic planning and assessment in an educational setting.
- Familiarity with the specific needs and challenges of community college students and programs.
