The Eyring Materials Center core facility, a part of ASU's Knowledge Enterprise, and School of Earth & Space Exploration’s President’s Professor Ariel Anbar, are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join METAL (Metals, Environmental, Terrestrial and Analytical Laboratory). The Postdoctoral Fellow will assist in managing a large, innovative, and diverse ICP-MS analytical and trace-metal clean lab facility. The position is for two years, with the potential for extension or transition to a staff position dependent on performance and facility demand.
The position is funded 50% by ASU’s METAL (Metals, Environmental and Terrestrial Analytical Laboratory), a multi-user analytical core facility that supports ASU and other academic researchers as well as commercial entities. We include ICP-OES, ICP-MS, a new Neoma MC-ICP-MS, laser ablation, IRMS with a full suite of peripherals, a trace metal clean laboratory, nutrient analysis, and greenhouse gas analysis as well as a full-time staff of five and three student workers.
The other 50% is funded by the MUSE astrobiology interdisciplinary consortium (https://museastrobiology.org/) with Deputy PI Ariel Anbar at ASU. The MUSE (Metal Utilization and Selection Across Eons) NASA center probes how life and Earth co-evolve through the lens of metal concentrations and isotopes.
Position responsibilities involve elemental and isotopic analyses of routine and non-routine samples by ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS, and the extensive interaction, oversight and mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, and outside laboratory users. Those with experience in transition metal isotope sample preparation and analysis as well as environmental analyses are preferred. Although this position has guaranteed funding for two years, the expectation is that development of an extramurally funded research program in collaboration with existing tenured faculty will eventually assist in financially supporting the postdoc.
