Job Summary
The Research Scientist Associate I will conduct and support multifaceted research on advanced, sustainable construction materials for infrastructure applications, utilizing various characterization techniques and modeling approaches, while collaborating across disciplines, assisting PhD students, and facilitating knowledge exchange between materials science departments and CACM .
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in research on advanced engineered materials for infrastructure applications
- Conduct research on sustainable construction materials and perform materials characterization using techniques such as XRD, SEM, TGA, FTIR and Raman
- Support research on enhancing durability and sustainability of next-generation structural materials, including studies on their electrochemical properties and mechanical behavior
- Contribute to experimental, analytical, and computational modeling of infrastructure materials
- Assist PhD students with their research projects and guide visitors in the lab, ensuring safety protocols are followed
- Participate actively in ongoing research projects, including processing and manufacturing of construction materials
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary researchers to advance knowledge in smart and innovative materials for infrastructure
- Act as a bridge between materials science departments/labs and CACM, facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange
- Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related field and/or equivalent relevant experience.
- Experience with materials characterization methods such as XRD, SEM, and TGA
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques relevant to materials characterization and testing
- Experience with ASTM testing standards and procedures
- Familiarity with computational modeling software for materials science applications
- Previous research experience in sustainable materials
- Knowledge of electrochemical testing methods
- Familiarity with multiscale modeling techniques
- Experience with nanoengineered materials and their implementation in infrastructure
- Prior experience mentoring or assisting graduate students in research settings
- Multidisciplinary background in materials science, encompassing areas such as solid-state physics, chemistry and engineering
- In-depth understanding of advanced materials science principles, particularly at the nanoscale.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining sophisticated materials testing equipment.
- Solid analytical skills for interpreting complex data from multiscale experiments and models.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with students, faculty, and lab visitors.
- Ability to work in a laboratory environment and handle nanomaterials safely.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and research methodologies.
- Commitment to advancing sustainable and innovative infrastructure solutions.
- The laboratory environment of CACM is controlled and maintained to ensure safety and efficiency. This includes regulated temperature, humidity, and ventilation
- The lab is equipped with various scientific instruments, chemicals, and materials, which require careful handling and operation
- Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment ( PPE ) such as lab coats, gloves, safety glasses, and masks
- Strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines is mandatory to minimize exposure to hazardous chemicals and other potential risks
- Employees are expected to participate in regular safety training and emergency drills
- Proper disposal of waste and decontamination procedures must be followed to maintain a safe working environment
