Position Summary

This position will assist with the planning, preparation, coordination, and/or execution of technical reforestation-related activities in various parts of the reforestation pipeline (i.e., tree seed, nursery, planting, and monitoring operations) as needed. Exact duties are expected to vary seasonally and as a function of operational needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Assist with reforestation-related operations as needed and directed, including, but not limited to: tree seed scouting, monitoring, collection, processing, laboratory testing, packaging, and inventory management; tree seedling nursery operations; tree planting planning, coordination, oversight, site preparations, seedling handling and transport; tree planting measurements and monitoring;
- Assist with record-keeping, data collection and management, data processing and/or analysis, and report preparation;
- Assist with the planning, execution, and/or support of reforestation-related training workshops;
- Equipment care and maintenance;
- Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

- A B.S. in Forestry or a closely-related discipline. For disciplines other than Forestry, the relevance of the field in which the B.S. was issued for purposes of meeting the minimum qualifications of this position shall be determined at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications

- Training and/or experience in tree seed collection, technical tree climbing, nursery production of tree seedlings, tree planting, and/or the planning and execution of field measurements associated with the monitoring of reforestation projects;
- Current or prior employment in a field-going position associated with the New Mexico Reforestation Center and/or the NSF -funded FORT - CREST project at NMHU ;
- M.S. in Forestry, Forest Science, or a closely-related discipline. For disciplines other than Forestry or Forest Science, the relevance of the field in which the M.S. was issued for purposes of preference for this position shall be determined at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Special Conditions for Eligibility

- Must possess and maintain a driver’s license allowing for legal operation of a university-owned vehicle in the State of New Mexico.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- A broad working knowledge of forestry in North America, especially in New Mexico and the greater southwestern US.
- Experience with reforestation-related activities such as seed scouting and monitoring, technical tree climbing, seed collection, seed processing and handling, reforestation nursery management, irrigation and fertilization of tree seedlings, handling and transport of tree seedlings, planning and execution of tree planting operations, planning and execution of tree seedling measurements and reforestation monitoring, seedling data collection and analysis, and preparation and public presentation of reforestation-related reports and/or workshops.
- Ability to adapt rapidly and efficiently to rapidly evolving operational needs and condition.
- Ability to interpret and execute written and verbal instructions, and to exercise sound judgment in operational settings.
- Ability to communicate and work well and efficiently with others, and to maintain a positive attitude and contribute to a positive working environment, under potentially harsh and stressful field conditions.
- Ability and willingness to travel, work outdoors, and camp as needed to accomplish job duties.
- Ability to adapt to and embrace seasonally changing working conditions and job duties while ensuring the safety of oneself and co-workers.

Physical Demands

- Must be able to lift and carry 50+ lbs. routinely and 75+ lbs. on occasion;
- Must be capable of safely working outdoors under a broad range of weather conditions year-round, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.

Working Environment

- Indoors in conditions ranging from an office environment to industrial greenhouse and/or seed processing facility shop floor conditions;
- Outdoors under a wide range of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.

Pay Rate
$45,000.00
