Position Title: Post Doctoral Fellow - Climate Smart

Department: College: College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences

Location: Blackville, SC

Open Date: Aug 05, 2024

Description

This position is part of a recently awarded Climate-Smart USDA-NRCS grant. The post doctoral fellow will be responsible for managing and coordinating measurements to determine greenhouse gas emissions and soil nutrient accumulation in beef cattle operations in response to climate-smart practices implemented. The post doctoral fellow will collect, summarize and develop reports about the measurements from each recruited farm (40% effort). The incumbent will also collect additional information on pasture and animal management from each farm, including forage samples for nutritive value and animal output(e.g., lbs. of meat per acre). These data will be summarized per each farm to obtain sustainability indicators (for example, methane or CO2 eq. emitted per lb. of meat) to assess the impact of there commended climate-smart practices on farm level greenhouse gas emission (20% effort). Also, the hired individual will be responsible for coordinating with the Extension Associates which farms will be recruited as collaborators to monitor measurements and which climate-smart practices will be implemented in each site. Also, the incumbent will work with the Market Development group to provide them with the information they require to fulfill their objectives (10% effort). The post doctoral fellow will also be responsible for assisting the field technician on the operation, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of greenhouse gas collection chambers and soil sampling equipment (20% effort). This is a very labor intensive monitoring endeavor that will require a trained individual with proper background to carry out the protocol. Thus, at the start of the project, it is essential to hire a postdoc with the combined knowledge and experience in conducting greenhouse gas and soil sampling measurements from beef cattle systems and properly understanding adequate management practices associated with forage and livestock management. This individual will be in close communication with collaborators and support the development of educational materials and written and oral reports about the measurements to be presented in cohorts of producers and other additional events (10%).
