Lecturer of Sociology

Empire State University is seeking candidates for a part-time (.75) Lecturer of Sociology position in the Department of Social Science and Public Affairs within our School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of excellence in teaching at a college level including evidence of online teaching experience; and to candidates with specialization in law and society, family and society, religion, and/or race/ethnicity.

SUNY Empire faculty provide mentoring to students in their academic program, including identifying opportunities for credit for prior learning. SUNY Empire supports faculty in their work with students and provides professional development activities that enhance their teaching and mentoring skills. A highly distributed organization, SUNY Empire makes extensive use of technological applications for communication, teaching and learning, and administrative purposes.

The successful candidate will:
  • Develop and teach online courses in Sociology, including Intro to Sociology, Social Problems, Global Social Problems, and Family and Society.
  • Mentor and advise students as they develop degree programs in a broad range of academic areas.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in curriculum development and academic assessment in the Social Science and Public Affairs Department.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across the faculty role.


Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
  • A master's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in sociology, or a closely related field.
  • College or university level teaching experience.
  • Experience with supporting diverse populations.
  • Ability to work in a distributed faculty environment.
  • Strong communication, computer, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Sociology from a regionally accredited US university or comparable non-US university.
  • Experience with teaching in online learning environments.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.
  • Experience with academic and outcomes assessment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult teaching and learning.
  • Experience with learning technologies, online teaching, and course development and revision.

Special Information:
  • Part-time (.75) temporary 12-month position.
  • Occasional travel will be required to fulfill university-wide commitments.
  • Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs.
  • Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis.

Additional Information:
Rank/Salary: Lecturer, $50,000 (part-time rate).
