Laboratory Manager
About the Opportunity
Job Summary
The Northeastern Biology Department is seeking a Laboratory Manager to support supports an intensive project-based laboratory course. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of laboratory equipment including, but not limited to, general microscopes, fluorescence microscopes, and computers. Moreover, experience in placing laboratory supply orders and supervising technical repairs and maintenance of equipment is expected. The person in this position must oversee supply and service issues, ensuring the equipment remains functional to multiple users, serves as primary point of contact for lab users (faculty, staff, graduate, and undergraduate students), and provides thorough problem resolution for lab equipment issues. The Laboratory Manager is accountable for training teaching faculty and staff on lab equipment, including student training, assures regulatory compliance of laboratories with units such as OSHA, DEA, DOT, and DLAM, and acts as the departmental safety officer within the teaching labs.
Key Responsibilities
1) Materials Procurement and Equipment Maintenance:
- Supervise maintenance of laboratories, including planning,
ordering equipment and supplies.
- Place and receive orders and maintain purchase records,
including corporate credit reconciliation.
- Review and evaluate contracts with suppliers and liaison with
sales representatives to ensure best pricing.
- Oversee equipment maintenance, arrange for necessary minor
repairs and work with Department Chair on more extensive repairs
and/or space issues.
2) Problem Resolution:
- Provide problem resolution to faculty, staff and students
related to the operation of the teaching laboratories.
- Serve as liaison between vendors, internal departments,
faculty, and lab staff, ensuring problems are resolved in a timely
manner.
- Take ownership of issues and bring them to resolution.
3) Train Students:
- Train students on proper use of instruments and
procedures.
- Provide oversight on proper usage and compliance.
- Coordinate safety training of all faculty, staff, graduate
students and work-study students, and research methods to reduce
waste and minimize potential for accidents.
4) Regulatory Compliance
- Assure that shipments meet DOT and other regulations and
supervise hazardous waste handling and removal.
- Respond to accidents and spills and to requests from the
institutional Animal Care and Radiation Safety Committees.
- Prepare, revise and review teaching lab protocols to ensure
compliance with human subject and animal care regulations as
appropriate.
Qualifications
Familiarity with research equipment used in laboratories, including microscopes, thermocyclers, autoclaves, etc. Excellent communication skills and strong skills in training and assisting student's research. Knowledge of molecular biology equipment and techniques and familiarity with model organisms used in genetics research a plus. Knowledge and skills normally acquired through completion of a Master's Degree in scientific field, with five plus years of experience in lab management.
