Position Summary:
The Department of Art + Design at Arkansas State University seeks applications for an instructor/3D Studio Shop Technician to begin August 2024.
The Department of Art + Design, has fourteen full-time faculty members, offering majors and minors in studio art, graphic design, art education, and art history with 180 majors currently enrolled.
Arkansas State University is an accredited institutional member of NASAD.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Training and supervising work-study personnel and coordinating shop monitor schedule with faculty
- Coordinating department safety concerns to ensure studio, faculty, and staff compliance with Environmental Health & Safety, EPA, and OSHA regulations
- Providing safety training to students in coordination with faculty
- Testing students in the safe use of equipment and the proper handling/storage of materials
- Organizing and maintaining inventory of tools and equipment in classroom and shop facilities
- Repairing equipment
- Submitting work orders as needed
- Keeping all tools in safe working order
- Specifying needed supplies for safety, equipment repair, and maintenance of 3D shops and classrooms
- Coordinating supply orders; tracking expenditures for bulk materials
- Managing 3D replacement parts/equipment budget
- Working with department faculty on special projects as needed to organize, repair, and maintain all labs.
- Teaching no more than 2 courses/semester in the 3D area (to include two 7-week courses for the community each semester)
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of operation and maintenance of ceramic studio equipment: loading and firing kilns (gas and electric), clay and glaze mixing for general studio classes
Knowledge of operation and maintenance of woodshop: safety protocol for operating power tools, miter saws, table saws, sanders, etc.
Phone and computer skills are essential.
Ability to manage employees and shop work.

Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The department seeks candidates for a one-year renewable position of 3D Studio Shop Technician/instructor. The successful candidate will teach no more than 2 courses/semester in the 3D area (to include two 7-week courses for the community each semester). In addition, the position is responsible for the technical operations of the 3D studio studios, including work in ceramics, the wood shop, the metal shop, and the foundry as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a metal shop
Experience working with a foundry
Previous experience ordering materials for studio consumption
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned MFA in Ceramics or Sculpture is required.
Must possess excellent organizational skills, communication skills, and be community-oriented.
At least one (1) year of teaching experience at the university level, which could include GTA and adjunct teaching.
Ability to lift 50 lbs
