Job Description:

BASIC FUNCTION:

The part-time Academic Coach provides program coordination and professional academic coaching to students enrolled in Salve's Ascension Program. Ascension is small and highly personalized first year coaching program for students who have been identified by the Admissions program as needing additional support transitioning to college. Students in the Ascension program have been conditionally admitted to the institution, but exhibit the potential to achieve success in our rigorous academic environment with support.

The part time Academic Coach guides Ascension program participants through their first year at Salve. This position is responsible for providing an assigned caseload of students with regular academic coaching to help them develop the personal and academic skills necessary to make a successful transition to college. Housed in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) this position works collaboratively with other departments and faculty across campus, including the CARE team, the Compass Center for Advising, Career & Life Design, ACE's Academic Coaching & Tutoring programs, and other faculty and departments as is necessary. This position reports to the Executive Director of Student Academic Success Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide academic coaching and support to cohort of Ascension students over the fall and spring semesters of their first year at Salve
  • Help students identify areas where academic or personal development is needed and support students in setting appropriate short- and long-term goals and action plans; provide benchmarks, coaching and accountability as students work toward their self-identified goals
  • Develop and provide student-centered learning assistance such as: goal-setting, motivation, time/task management, active learning strategies (note-taking, reading comprehension, test-taking), communication with professors, research and library navigation assistance, and campus resources
  • Develop and execute engaging programs, workshops and resources for students in the Ascension program, collaborating with the Academic Progress Coordinator when possible
  • Collaborate with the Academic Progress Coordinator and Compass Advisors to monitor academic engagement and progress of Ascension students during the week 4 Early Progress Report and at midterm
  • Utilize a variety of technologies in order to monitor student progress including TracCloud and Advocate (CARE Team)
  • Execute academic interventions as is necessary, collaborating with faculty, ACE professional staff, academic advisors, or other CARE team members in the intervention process;
  • Provide appropriate referrals to academic departments, student support programs and other university resources as necessary to help students achieve their academic goals
  • Work closely with the Executive Director of SASS on program administration, reporting, program and outcome development, and reviewing relevant university policies and webpages
  • Keep and maintain FERPA protected student records
  • Remain current on knowledge of university-wide curriculum, policies and campus resources that support student success
  • Stay current on best practices in the area of at-risk student support
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of work, education, or tutoring experience, preferably in academic support services or academic advising
  • Excellent planning, administrative and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively guide students toward setting and reaching goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-centeredness, equity and inclusion
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of FERPA privacy regulations and the ability to handle confidential information
  • Demonstrated capacity to utilize and learn various software applications, learning platforms, and technology-based systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, psychology, or closely related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student developmental theory
  • Experience with academic technologies used to support student success and advising (e.g. Colleague, Canvas, TracCloud or other student record systems or early alert systems)
