General Summary

The Director of Annual Giving (Director) is responsible for implementing a comprehensive multi-channel annual giving program that focuses on gifts of less than $25,000. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Advancement Services and Strategic Solutions, the Director will apply creativity and strategic communication in a wide range of solicitations. An integral member of the Advancement team, this position requires excellent collaboration and communication skills to develop and maintain partnerships with Advancement staff, faculty, and staff.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and monitor strategic solicitation plans focused on acquiring, retaining, and engaging alumni and friends of EMU, resulting in unrestricted annual fund giving and/or support for other university priorities.
  • Create and execute appeal materials in collaboration with Advancement teammates to be utilized for direct mail, email, digital, and more.
  • Co-lead crowdfunding initiatives.
  • Evaluate and utilize large data sets to inform data-driven decisions regarding solicitations, trends, and outcomes of annual giving activities.
  • Lead a co-operative appeal plan in collaboration with Directors of Development and the AVP, Principal and Major Gifts.
  • Analyze current practices to identify opportunities to strengthen efforts and adapt based on analysis, benchmarking, and best practices.
  • Manage EMU's participation in giving days, including all planning and implementation of Giving TrueDay.
  • Manage a portfolio of leadership annual giving donors and identify potential major donors in collaboration with Directors of
  • Development, Director of Prospect Development, and the AVP, Principal and Major Gifts.
  • Collaborate with Alumni Engagement teammates to establish a plan to build a culture of philanthropy among students, recent alumni, and affinity groups.
  • Manage a budget and steward resources strategically.
  • Work closely with Advancement and University colleagues on select campus-wide programs and initiatives, like giving days and other special campaigns.
  • Actively participate in Advancement Office activities such as attending meetings and retreats, facilitating communication channels, and representing the office on campus at events and activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two to four years of nonprofit or development experience required.

Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage, plan and organize, set priorities, establish work objectives, and follow through on projects.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to listen effectively and solicit information from others.

Creative and critical thinking skills, with an interest in thinking outside the box to address challenges or create new programs.

Must be able to provide project leadership, anticipate issues, and solve problems as they arise.

Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, work comfortably as part of a group, and work well independently to complete projects and tasks.

Work effectively in a multi-faceted organization and develop cooperative and mutually respectful relationships with colleagues at all levels, as well as diverse individuals and communities.

Demonstrate an authentic and enthusiastic interest in the mission of the University.

Proficiency in Microsoft programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Creative and critical thinking skills, with an interest in thinking outside the box to address challenges or create new programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in marketing, public relations, or annual/major giving is preferred.

Experience with donor management software (Raiser's Edge) preferred, but not required.
