Class Summary

The Student Life Specialist position provides student mentoring and support for a broad range of student clubs and organizations to deliver quality programming to enhance campus wide community engagement, student leadership development, and the educational value of the student engagement experience. Mentoring broadly includes educating, coaching, and supporting both individual students and groups of students. Exercises discretion and independent judgment and ensures adherence to COM Policies, specifically as they relate to student engagement activities, events, and travel.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Life, the SL Specialist provides leadership in event planning, budgeting, recruiting & retaining students, student travel, campus and community resources, risk management, fundraising, maintenance of SL records, social media, publicity, group development and other areas specific to the needs of individual clubs and students on campus.

Minimum Education/Training/Experience

•BA or BS in Education, Kinesiology, Student Affairs, or any other field related to the position
•Experience having a leadership role in or with student groups while a student in higher education.
•Proficiency with social media.
•3 year experience having a leadership role in or with student groups in higher education.
•Demonstrated leadership in initiating and implementing educational programming among student groups/organizations.

Preferred Education/Training/Experience

•Master’s Degree in Education, Kinesiology, Student Affairs, or any other field related to the position

Minimum Knowledge & Skills

Collect, gather and validate data, prepare basic reports, document processes and internal controls.
•Input data, create surveys and data tracking, update electronic databases, and associated material.
•Assist with all Student Life, recreation, community leagues and Club Sports events and special projects.
•Manage department files and forms.
•Provide office support including taking phone calls and messages and gym front desk coverage as needed.
•Enhance services to students by collecting data and preparing official reports necessary to ensure quality services to students and acquisition of additional resources when necessary.
•Create social media and web presence with marketing department. Compile and publish messages, announcements, and event information to students and colleagues as needed.
•Design and manage surveys and assessments for SL department.
•Design departmental marketing, signage, and presentation materials as needed.
•Work collaboratively with departments across campus to ensure positive student experiences with student life activities and events.
•Proficiency with common office software (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc.)
•Exemplary people and communication skills are critical Ability to create and display
•PowerPoint presentations
•Time management and strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize and respond in a timely fashion
•Excellent customer service skills
•Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships and positively serve a diverse population
•Ability to prioritize own work and to work with minimal supervision and maintain confidential information

Preferred Knowledge & Skills
  1. Schedules events and meetings; maintains Student Life activities special events calendars
  2. Assesses student needs at main campus and satellite campuses to guide the development of Student Life events to meet those needs
  3. Coordinates catering, technology, and facilities needs for Student Life events
  4. Purchases supplies and promotional specialty items for Student Life office and student organizations
  5. Assists in Student Life budget planning process by tracking budget expenditures and monitoring student organizations’ budget tracking process
  6. Assists in completing essential paperwork for student travel and event planning
  7. Assists with maintenance of Student Life website, assisting student organizations with advertising events and meetings
  8. Promotes Student Development, Leadership and Service Learning.
  9. Disperses Student Life related information to students; creates promotional flyers for Student Life events; maintains campus bulletin boards and Student Life poster frames throughout campus
  10. Collaborates with student support programs to create seamless connections across services that result in increased resources and support for students.
  11. Trains and evaluates the performance of assigned student staff and work-study staff; interviews and selects employees and recommendations.
  12. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned



Licensing/Certification Requirements

CPR / AED – willing to complete within first 30 days of hire.

Job Duties

•Provide leadership for and ensure the quality of activities and events which include but are not limited to: New Student Orientation, First Year Experience, QEP initiatives, and other collaboration efforts campuswide.
•Ensure adherence to COM Policies, specifically as they relate to student activities, events, and travel.•Provide leadership and supervision for student life events and activities, including encouraging current student participation.
•Provide budget oversight for SL activities and events.
•Serve as campus resource for Student Life clubs and organizations.
•Create social media presence for Student Life, including weekly social media announcements and e-newsletters to effectively communicate events and activities to students.
•Assist Institutional Advancement office and College Connections Advisors with recruitment and community events as appropriate.
•Expand the Student Wellness and Intramural sports
•Back up the Director with Gym Facility needs
•Support Leadership Rotaract and President Ambassador Program.

Physical Requirements

•Positions in this class typically require walking or standing for extended periods of time; lifting,pushing, pulling and moving equipment, furniture etc.
•Medium Work- Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work.
