Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional 1 - MR07)

The Academic Advisor will provide quality academic advisement to an assigned caseload of first-year college students. This position will educate students on degree requirements, policies and procedures, campus resources, and how to use advising tools and technology. The Academic Advisor will counsel students experiencing academic obstacles, maintain accurate records, and assist with new student orientation. Additionally, this position will maintain relationships with assigned academic departments and perform other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Aid students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals; help students navigate higher education and prepare for their second year in college; develop academic plans that support students' academic, professional, and personal goals; educate students about degree requirements, university policies and procedures, how to access resources, and how to use advising-related tools and technology; counsel students with identifying and overcoming obstacles through thoughtful educational planning; make appropriate referrals to campus services and resources that promote academic success and campus engagement; communicate effectively with students, their families, and campus stakeholders; maintain accurate student records, creating and updating accurate degree plans for caseload, entering effective appointment notes, and developing and maintaining a strong communication line with academic departments and various student support divisions, and regularly participating in UTC's Advisors' Council; preregister incoming first-year students, present information sessions, and assist students with advising and registering for classes at new student orientation; cover designated office walk-in hours and respond to departmental email.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty of all cultural backgrounds and experience levels
  • Attentiveness to detail, proficient computer skills and strong organization skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner
  • Ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree, experience in a secondary or higher education setting working with the academic needs of high school seniors, prospective college students, or college students

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree, experience in a higher education setting working one-on-one with first-year college students by providing advising-related services, experience with Banner and EAB Navigate platforms
