Pre-Clinical/Clinical Faculty - Pediatric Dentistry (Evergreen position)

Primary Purpose and Essential Functions:
The Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, invites applicants to apply for a part-time, teacher-clinician; 0.5 to 2 days per week, 40 weeks per year.

The department is responsible for teaching pediatric dentistry at the pre-doctoral level. Teaching is done in a humanistic manner, such that students are enthusiastic about providing oral healthcare to children and inspired by the professionalism, expertise, and demeanor of the departmental faculty and staff. Additionally, the school's dental auxiliary utilization (DAU) program is part of the department, and is taught concurrently with pediatric dentistry both pre-clinically and in the pediatric clinic.

In addition to the formal curriculum, the department is active in community outreach activities, and independently as well as in conjunction with the student-organized outreach group (SCOPE), organizes, coordinates and provides outreach activities to the children of the community.

Department faculty members are integral in all activities of the department, and teach the students in all areas by instruction and also by example.

Responsibilities may include any of the following:
  • Preclinical instruction
  • Clinical instruction
  • Specialty Preparatory Activities
  • Teaching activities in interdisciplinary courses and other departments in the school

These activities are assigned by the Department Chair in consultation with the individual faculty member.

Workload:
Because Pediatric Dentistry is a small department, with extensive commitments within the school, workload varies quarter to quarter. Specific workload and scheduling will be adjusted based on the faculty member's as well as the department's needs.

For part-time faculty in the teacher-clinician track, emphasis is placed on teaching activities, but participation in scholarship and service is encouraged.

Minimum Qualifications:
Current Knowledge of:
  • Current Edition of AAPD Pediatric Dentistry Reference Manual
  • Dental school educational processes
  • Restorative and preventive information and technique

Education:
  • DDS/DMD or international equivalent; degree earned from ADA-accredited school of dentistry is preferred.
  • Certificate or Master’s degree indicating successful completion of an ADA-accredited specialty training program in pediatric dentistry is required
  • Current, active license to practice dentistry
  • Valid CPR certification

Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
  • Board certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry is desirable, but not required

Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse population of patients, students, staff, faculty and administration
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Work effectively as a team with administrators, faculty, staff, and students
  • Maintain confidentiality of information
  • Demonstrate professional judgment in all situations
  • Sincere desire to learn from and to teach students in all phases of the curriculum, using a humanistic educational model
  • Sincere desire for personal growth and development as an educator
  • Involvement or desire to be involved in organized dentistry, especially organized pediatric dentistry
  • Involvement or desire to be involved in community outreach activities
  • Involvement or desire to participate in professional education beyond the school, on local, state, regional, national and international levels

Physical Requirements:
GENERAL: Faculty should have sufficient motor function to execute movements essential to providing oral health care to patients.
SPECIFIC: Must possess the motor skills to perform palpation, percussion, auscultation and other diagnostic maneuvers, basic laboratory tests, dental preparations, and diagnostic procedures in a timely manner. Such actions require coordination of gross and fine muscular movements, equilibrium, and functional uses of the senses of touch and vision.
SPECIFIC: Must be able to perform basic life support including CPR, transfer and position patients with disabilities, physically restrain children who lack motor control, and position and reposition himself or herself around the patient and chair in sitting and standing positions for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to operate controls, use high-speed or low-speed dental handpieces for tooth preparation procedures, and use hand instrumentation including scalpels for surgical procedures. All of these skills must be performed within reasonable time frames.
