Position Summary

This position is designed to assist with custodial coverage on the UW-La Crosse campus in academic buildings, residence halls or university centers. This position is responsible for daily cleaning including dusting, mopping, trash removal, and minor repair of equipment. In addition, this position will assist with moving projects which requires the ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis. Specific duties, areas of responsibility, work hours and schedule assigned on a position by position basis.

Report to Custodial supervisor for instructions on covering absences and other projects. Help with snow and ice removal as assigned by supervisor. Do special projects and work off of the projects list. These projects will include extracting carpeting, buffing or stripping and waxing floors, deliming showers and moving furniture or other equipment in the vehicle down to Physical Plant or other locations for repairs, storage, recycle or trash.

Morning Break: 8AM to 8:15AM

Cover absences in all buildings as assigned using the following guidelines:

One building or area; Cover the entire area as if the person was there cleaning . Clean bathrooms on the normal schedule times. Daily clean and disinfect sinks, mirror ledges, stools, urinals, fixtures, shower partitions, benches, drains, soap dishes; remove hair from drains in showers; clean mirrors and hand dryers; empty wastebaskets and sanitary napkins and replace liners daily, check soap dispensers and toilet paper & replenish as needed, check light fixtures daily and replace bulbs as needed; sweep and mop (with disinfectant) entire floor everyday.
Wipe off and straighten furniture in all common areas. Empty wastebaskets, pick up litter and vacuum as needed. Vacuum and wet mop entrances and stairways. Take trash out to dumpsters. Check “fix it” sheets and do repairs as requested.

Two buildings or areas; clean bathrooms the same as above. Walk through the entire area (lobby, laundry room, kitchen, ect.) and straighten furniture and dump wastebaskets. Clean up any vomit or major spills.

Three buildings or areas: clean bathrooms same as above.

Lunch Break: Noon to 12:30PM

Move equipment or furniture as directed. Get supplies from Campus Stores following Campus Stores and Office of Residence Life sign out procedures, and deliver to housekeepers as directed by the Supervisor.

Clean Residence Life vehicles. Keep the necessary cleaning supplies for you to work with and be ready for service at all times.

Afternoon Break: 1:30PM to 1:45PM

Straighten supply and storage rooms. Keep them clean and orderly so that it can easily be determined what is stored in them.
In addition; there will be special deep cleaning projects during winter, spring and summer breaks ( see list ).

This work schedule is not meant to be all inclusive and may be adjusted by your Supervisor.

The Division of Student Affairs’ role is to enhance and support students learning experience here at UWL . We work closely with faculty, staff, community members, alumni and most importantly, students to provide quality programs and services which promote learning, leadership, involvement, service, and the celebration of diversity. The Division includes several departments: Campus Child Center, Counseling and Testing, Student Health Center, Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreational Sports, Residence Life, Student Life, University Centers, and the Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students office. The staff of the Division is truly student-centered and concerned about the holistic development of the student.

Required Qualifications

• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
• Ability to repeatedly push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, and climb ladders.
• Must be able to work with hands and arms above shoulder level; requires considerable movement of the arms, twisting and bending of the back.
• Ability to perform duties within extreme temperature ranges for trash removal from the buildings and also snow and ice removal from entrances.
• Must have sufficient physical strength and flexibility to lift and pour 5-gallon containers of chemicals, to empty buckets and to remove garbage, trash, and recycling from the buildings.
• Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit to perform essential job functions for the duration of the shift.
• Ability to observe and react to hazards and changing conditions in the work environment (e.g., wet floors, broken glass, member or other person in need of assistance, etc.)
• Ability to read work instructions and schedules, warning signs, and labels.
• Ability to retain and carry out multiple work assignments.
• Knowledge of basic safety precautions including use of caustic and toxic chemicals, methods of lifting heavy objects, safe work clothing and coverings, and the use of personal protection equipment.
• Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as industrial vacuum cleaners and carpet extractors, and electric floor buffers.
• Valid Wisconsin Drivers License

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior custodial experience.
• Experience with event set-ups.

Physical Demands

• Sweep/dust mop/wet mop floors, steps and landings. Remove gum as needed.
• Operate floor care equipment to remove old floor finish and sealer.
• Apply new sealer and floor finish. Perform periodic burnishing of floors.
• Vacuum carpeting and mats. Move furniture as needed.
• Operate carpet shampooing equipment to clean carpeting and mats.

• Move furniture, equipment and packages for set-ups, periodic cleaning and relocating purposes, must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.

• Test pool water, keep records of results and make necessary adjustments to maintain proper levels.
